3.0 out of 5 stars The beginning of the slide into AOR mediocrity, 12 Dec 2001
In 1976 Blue Öyster Cult were on the cusp of something big. They had released three studio albums to great acclaim and one live album that was a monster seller. Then came 'Agents of Fortune', replete with 'Don't Fear The Reaper', and they must have known they had it made. The album was huge, and the single (need you ask?) was a worldwide hit, and it is still probably the only Blue Öyster Cult song that most people could name.

The album revealed a different, quasi-commercial approach, the beginning of their slippery slide into 'Boston-esque' oblivion. Everything sounds more polished, more stylised and less interesting. There are some classic 'rock' tracks here, such as 'ETI', 'This Ain't the Summer of Love' and 'True Confessions', but they are all lacking in the majesty and humour of much of their earlier work. It's almost as if the band and their producer and mentor Sandy Pearlman had set out to make a 'classic' rock album. Albert Bouchard has recently confirmed that this is just what they did, and they certainly got it right.

However, the album does have some high points, notably 'The Revenge of Vera Gemini', a real Cult cracker, featuring the vocals talents of Patti Smith, and 'Debbie Denise', both provided by drummer Albert Bouchard and Ms Smith. The bonus tracks, of which there are four, are equally interesting, revealing that what was left off was of equal commercial stature to what was put on the record. Interestingly, one of the bonus tracks is a version of 'Fire of Unknown Origin', later the title track of their 1981 outing with different music.

It's not a bad album, but the quirkiness and drive that made the first three so good was now irrevocably gone, replaced by an increasingly rampant bland commercialism. If you love 'Don't Fear the Reaper', then buy this now, but if you want to know what lay at the heart of the band, get one of their first three, or the live 'On Your Feet Or On Your Knees'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fortune favours the brave, 14 Sep 2004
By Aja "drumbo41" (Newbridge, Midlothian) - See all my reviews
Blue Oyster Cult's ground-breaking mid-70s masterpiece majestically stands the test of time. There is only one duff track, and that's not a bad return for an era when records were often split between good side ones and crap side twos (that was vinyl for you).
Yet for all its genius it remains an album which divides Cultists sharply, even more than their seminal live double set, On Your Feet Or On Your Knees. Perhaps that's because it saw the BOC grasping blindly, Triffid-like, for a wider audience. They succeeded beyond their wildest dreams.
The opener, This Ain't The Summer Of Love, is a howling statement of intent, with punk just beginning to cut its teeth.
Yet True Confessions could come from an old soul album, with its parping brass and coy lyrics. Then before you know it, it's there: Don't Fear The Reaper, all glassy guitar lines, menacing vocals and superb harmonies, The Byrds meet Dr Frankenstein. It set the template for what was to come, and what a heady brew it was. ETI, The Revenge of Vera Gemini (you'll believe Patti Smith can rock, maaaaaan), Sinful Love, Tattoo Vampire, Tenderloin, Debbie Denise: an embarrassment of riches. The one low point is Morning Final, a kind of low-brow, finger-wagging "this is what happens to people who take drugs, kids", but thanks to the magic of cds you can edit it out and need never be bothered by it again.
Agents of Fortune was BOC's finest hour; don't let anybody tell you different. Only the sublime follow-up Spectres came close. Where are they now that we need them?

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great re-release, 26 Jun 2001
By A Customer
This CD contains the original demo of the BOC classic track "Don't Fear The Reaper" as well as the original version of "Fire of Unknown Origin". These two tracks, as well as the other two additional tracks ("Dance The Night Away" and "Sally") are worth the price of the CD.
