3.0 out of 5 stars Japanese inappropriate, 18 Sep 2001
By C. Verspeak "f*" (London) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Japanese in acction is not a good choice for the beginner. Its style of teaching feels like being thrown in at the deep end of a very deep pool indeed. Although the package is undoubtedly full of interesting video and usefull scenarios, it does not really Teach the user the Japanese language. One is expected primarily to follow mono- and dia- logues in the language, presumably picking up phrases, pronunciation, and grammar along the way. It is possible to find rules of grammar and spelling on the disc, but one feels these are included as an afterthought, perhaps intended for serious students who may happen to pick up the product. This package feels like it was designed for people who already have a good grasp of the language and would like to practise its use. There are games involving rearranging mixed up sentences and crosswords and the opportunity to compare one's pronunciation with native speakers is also featured. On a technical front, I did not find the front-end particularly appealing either. There are many options available, which necessarily means small buttons and screens. Some sections can sometimes be minimized. This points out another weakness in the program - a lack of consistency in presentation. Overall I was disappointed with this purchase but I suspect its developers may have been too. The content is good. It is not particularly user-friendly though and is not lkely to help a new student develop real language skills. A more experienced speaker may find it helpful to practise with.

4.0 out of 5 stars More of a tool than a language course, 13 Oct 2001
By O. Hall (Liverpool, England) - See all my reviews

Despite the comments in some of the other reviews, I thought I'd give this product a go, and I'm very pleased I did.

As it states in the instructions, this certainly isn't the sort of thing for people who prefer a traditional structured course. It's really a selection of vocab, aural and pronunciation tools, and so sits well with these traditional methods.

It certainly helps if you've had some exposure to the language already, and from there I'd recommend this package to anyone looking to practice their spoken Japanese, or looking for a computer based vocab/grammar reference.

It relies heavily on sound & recording (and then gives you a comparison of your pronunciation against the reference voice), so make sure you have these facilities on your machine.
