I purchased this product in good faith, and to be honest, find it very difficult to use. I tried putting stair in with a return, but it constantly reduces the size of my first flight so as to not reach the upper floor. It is VERY American, in that most of the furniture is on a massive scale and doesn't fit in UK homes - and you cannot customise them. You can have bay windows - but not bays, so you are left with a window hanging off your wall. You cannot have velux windows or any glass in the roof and you are very restricted with building roof - of course, we all have simple up & down roof don't we. All in all - Rubbish!!

This is a relatively cheap but powerful suite of programs to enable you to design and create floor plans and 3D images of rooms or whole buildings. The Floorplan website provides some impressive examples of some of the effects and images that can be created. The program allows you to move around the 3D image.
I liked the fact that when drawing walls the program provides a continuously updated measurement read out making it very easy to draw walls of the correct dimensions. I also liked the way in which walls could be lengthened or moved by simply pointing, clicking and dragging.
The program comes with a database of images (including windows, doors, furniture, lights, bathroom and kitchen elements etc) that can be selected, customised and entered into drawings. The suite includes Turbocad Designer V7. This is a similarly sophisticated 3D drawing package which enables you to create new custom objects to use with Floorplan. This however takes a lot of learning (I have yet to get to grips with it).
Unfortunately I found that the program could be difficult to use and it has a number of annoying characteristics. As it is a US package the database of objects is not particularly well suited to the UK market. There is no simple way for creating images that are common in the UK housing stock, for example; sloping walls; roof lights; windows in gable ends; conservatories.
These drawbacks limit its usefulness. There are work-arounds for these problems but they are complex and often require the use of "invisiible walls" which are known to increase the chances of the program crashing. The default roof is a hip roof and any complex arrangement of walls leads to the automatic creation of a complex roof structure. It is a tedious process to convert hip roofs to gabled roofs requiring each element of the hip roof to be modified in turn. Again roofs can make the program prone to crash. Inserting furniture and stairs can be frustrating as the program seems occasionally to decide where these should go and then doesn't want to let you move them.
Complex buildings (several floors with installed furnishings and appliances) can be very slow to work with. I found that using the library of completed plans provided with the package was almost impossible because of processing delays, particularly when in 3D mode. (I'm using the progam in a Virtual PC environment on an Apple G4, 450 MHz machine with 125Mbytes RAM allocated to the PC environment).
All in all the promise on the product that "designing and remodelling your home is as easy as 1.2.3" is a bit of an exaggeration. I thought it was a good product let down by its inability to deal easily with some common requirements, slow processing, a tendency to crash and a number of apparent glitches.

I bought this having seen professional CAD type programmes and knew exactly what I wanted. We are looking at building an extension to our house and needed something whereby the existing layout of our house could be plotted in (to scale) and the new extension added to it. This would enable us to 'experiment' with various options/designs.

Floor Plan 3D does all of this and more and it is so easy. The plans are of a professional standard and at a click of a button give you the 3D view so that one can see exactly how it will look either form a walk around or external view.

The dimensions of walls etc are automatically displayed as you 'drag' the mouse from point to point. The actual time taken is in measuring what is already in place, but if you can use a tape measure you've already satisfied any pre-requisite (apart from knowing how to turn the PC on) for designing your new home/extension/room on Floor Plan 3D. Measurements can be changed from feet and inches to metres or centimetres. Lighting can be added and the effect of it is reflected in the 3D view (very useful). Appliances, windows, doors, stairs, beds, wardrobes, you name it, it's there and it can all be customised. This is so useful when one is planning the actual layout of a room as everything is to scale so you can see just where and how that new suite is going to fit in! And just to put the icing on the cake one can see the finished idea in the form of a picture (photo-realistic).

This has got to be a must for any electrician, kitchen designer, builder or just those whom are interested in 'playing' with ideas for designing/modifying any aspect of their home.
