Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Featuring a blousy, winningly inept size-12 heroine, Bridget Jones's Diary is a fetching adaptation of Helen Fielding's runaway bestseller, grittier than Ally McBeal but sweeter than Sex and the City. The normally sylphlike Renée Zellweger (Nurse Betty, Me, Myself and Irene) wolfed pasta to gain poundage to play "singleton" Bridget, a London-based publicist who divides her free time between binge eating in front of the TV, downing Chardonnay with her friends and updating the diary in which she records her negligible weight fluctuations and romantic misadventures of the year. Things start off badly at Christmas when her mother tries to set her up with seemingly standoffish lawyer Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), whom Bridget accidentally overhears "dissing" her. Instead she embarks on a disastrous liaison with her raffish boss, Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant, infinitely more likable when he's playing a baddie instead of his patented tongue-tied fops). Eventually, Bridget comes to wonder if she's let her pride prejudice her against the surprisingly attractive Mr Darcy.

If the plot sounds familiar, that's because Fielding's novel was itself a retelling of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, whose romantic male lead is Mr Darcy. An extra ironic poke in the ribs is added by the casting of Firth, who played Austen's haughty hero in the acclaimed BBC adaptation of Austen's novel. First-time director Sharon Maguire directs with confident comic zest, while Zellweger twinkles charmingly, fearlessly baring her cellulite and pulling off a spot-on English accent. Like Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill (both of which were written by this film's co-screenwriter, Richard Curtis), Bridget Jones's stock-in-trade is a very English self-deprecating sense of humour, a mild suspicion of Americans (especially if they're thin and successful) and a subtly expressed analysis of thirtysomething fears about growing up and becoming a "smug married". The whole is, as Bridget would say, v. good. --Leslie Felperin

5.0 out of 5 stars WILL become one of the classic films of the 21st century!, 15 Jul 2002
What a film. Renee Zellweger plays Bridget Jones with a fantastic British accent and makes the character amazingly realistic and someone every woman should be able to relate to. I loved the way that Bridget was not stick thin but curvy- it makes everyone feel better about who they are. My favourite parts of the film were when Mark Darcy and Daniel Cleaver were fighting and the scene right at the beginning when Bridget was miming along to 'All by Myself.'Every woman should watch this and although this film is ultimately a chic flick I know many men who have also enjoyed it. Trust me-buy this video, stay in for an evening and laugh yourself silly watching this film!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best laugh I've had in ages!, 28 Nov 2001

This film is so funny and it really is one that alot of us girls out there can relate to! Bridget has a crazy single lifestyle until she is charmed by Daniel (Hugh Grant) but he turns out to be the creep that you could guess he was at the start of the film. Colin Firth on the other hand (yum) plays the lovely Mark Darcy who tells Bridget he likes her and it takes her a while to get there but she eventually realises she likes him too and it all works out great! The fight scene between Mark and Daniel is the funniest bit in the film especially when Geri Halliwell's 'It's Raining Men' is playing in the background! The end is really good too!
This is A MUST SEE and it's a film you can happily watch over and over again! I loved it(like you hadnt already guessed!)

5.0 out of 5 stars The most charming British romcom since Four Weddings, 27 Sep 2001
Where to start when reviewing this neat little adaptation of the million-selling book. Well for a start there's the faultless cast: Renee Zellweger can't put a foot wrong in the role of Bridget, all the quarrels about authenticity of accent are eradicated as her endearing vulnerability is the heart of this tale of girl falling for false love, realising her mistake and finally finding true love. Hugh Grant finally plays the cad, and it makes a sexy change from the bumbling idiot. Colin Firth reprises his infamous Mr Darcy role to great comic effect and the script bubbles over with hilarious moments aplenty for our talented cast to get their teeth into. A real treat for anyone with a sense of humour and a heart.
