Amazon.co.uk Review

Like its predecessor, Once Upon a Time in China 2 stars Jet Li as Wong Fei Hung, this time pitched against the xenophobic White Lotus cult, which is violently trying to rid China of foreigners (the period is the early 20th century). To complicate matters, he also finds himself fighting against the reactionary Chinese government.

The martial arts battles, in particular one against co-star Donnie Yen as the government's strongman, are everything connoisseurs could wish for. Jet Li is not only acrobatic; he has a powerful screen presence that makes him a convincing hero. Production values, including sets and costumes, are excellent. The only flaw, at least to Western eyes, is the comedy, which has corny jokes about eating dog meat and so forth.

On the DVD: the DVD is in widescreen format, with high-quality picture and sound and well-produced subtitles. The extras are well worth having, and include a lengthy scroll-down text biography of Jet Li, interviews with the star and with Donnie Yen, and a very informative audio commentary by Hong Kong cinema expert Bey Logan. --Ed Buscombe

5.0 out of 5 stars A worthy sequel? Surely not? But it's true!, 15 Mar 2002
By Mr. A. T. Whitaker - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This sequel to the brilliant and critically-acclaimed Once Upon A Time In China continues this variation on the legend of Wong Fei-Hung as he visits Canton and somehow gets embroiled in the battle against the White Lotus cult, whose martial-art expert leader (played by Xin-Xin Xiong, who actually doubled for Li in the original following a nasty injury Li picked up) has found a way (which I won't reveal here, as it's a pretty major plot-point) to deal with the foreign guns.

Also opposing Fei-Hung is the government General, played by the martial-arts-gifted Donnie Yen ('In The Line Of Duty', 'Iron Monkey'), who has been seen as the closest in ability and speed to Bruce Lee, thus making him a worthy foe for Jet Li in his second outing in the series as Wong Fei-Hung.

Like its predecessor, the acting, the attention to detail and the development in the characters has not been compromised, and the action sequences are every bit as delightful as before (but would you expect anything less from Yuen Woo-Ping, choreographer of 'The Matrix' and 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'?). The developing bond between 13th Aunt Peony Yee (Rosamund Kwan reprising her role) and Fei-Hung takes another step further, much to the latter's surprise.

One flaw that may slightly upset fans (I know it upset the actor at the time) was the departure of Yuen Biao from the series after the original as the character Foon, who is played from this movie onwards by Mok Siu Chung. While Mok adds comedy to the role, fans may miss Biao's incredible acrobatics and frightening kicking ability.

While the story itself may not be quite up to the standard of the first, this is still class, and is different enough to warrant a look. Both Donnie Yen and Xin-Xin Xiong provide some stunning combat scenes that you'll want to look at again and again.

Contains both English Dubbed and Cantonese Subtitled versions on the DVD (I prefer the latter), as well as extras including interviews with Jet Li and Donnie Yen (who speaks very good English and is at the time of writing working on the sequel to the Wesley Snipes 1998 'Blade' movie).

5.0 out of 5 stars The greatest martial arts movie ever made, 27 Sep 2001
Tsui Hark and Jet Li somehow manage to top the breathtaking Once Upon A Time In China with this epic sequel. The story and direction are better than I'd dared to hope and the inclusion of the brilliant Donnie Yen results in two of the greatest battles in movie history.
If you're a kung fu fan, you MUST own this, and if you're not, maybe this series will conform you.
Incredible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, 12 Feb 2002
In nearly every occasion it is difficult to say a sequel is equally or better than the original, however Once Upon a Time in China II is an exception to this rule. Incredible choreography from the start through to the final showdown this is a kung-fu film that will set the standard in any collection along side the original.

You will not regret purchasing this film!
