Amazon.co.uk Review
The Karate Kid was a hugely popular 1984 drama by John G Avildsen who had also directed the original fighting classic Rocky. The new kid in town (Ralph Macchio), targeted by karate-kicking bullies, gets himself a mentor in the form of the Japanese handyman (Pat Morita) from his apartment building. The mentor teaches him self-confidence, fighting skills and the art of karate. The screen partnership of Macchio's motor-mouth character and Morita's reserved father figure works well and the script allows for the younger man to develop sympathy for the painful memories of his teacher. But the film's real engine is the fighting, and there's plenty of that. The film went on to breed many Karate Kid wannabes in the mid-80s.

Literally picking up about five minutes after the conclusion of the original, the 1986 sequel The Karate Kid 2 sends Ralph Macchio's and Pat Morita's characters to the latter's home turf in Japan, where the older man is confronted by an old rival, and Macchio's newly confident fighter gets a tougher challenge than the punks back home. Sillier than its predecessor, this follow-up at least has some distracting soap opera elements as Morita comes to terms with an old flame, while Macchio woos a lovely local girl. Ironically, it's the action that evokes laughter, particularly a climactic fight that gets over the top quickly. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

In a vain effort not to let a good thing die, director John G Avildsen attempted once more to revive the action and popularity of the original Karate Kid with the 1989 adventure, the third and final instalment. More silly and absurd than either of its predecessors Karate Kid 3 marked the final outing for the "Kid" Macchio (who was now 27) and his mentor, as the youth audience of the day moved away from the desire to be Karate Kids and toward the need to be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles instead. --Nikki Disney

4.0 out of 5 stars The magic of the Karate Kid brought to DVD. - A KNOCKOUT!, 19 Sep 2001
By A Customer
Asked about a film from decades gone by that captured the imagination of all, and the hearts of many, few spring to mind. Asked of a film that represents what can be achieved by effort, determination and a want to succeed, there are even less. Mention karate with the previous two sentences and we are all left uttering the same words. "The Karate Kid".

The DVD box set captures all the magic of these films on our favourite format, at a knockout price. We are sent back to a time where Danny Larusso (Played by Ralph Macchio) is the new kid in town, facing new challenges, and trying to make new friends. When a group karate students Danny's age decide to make life difficult for him; he is lucky to be taken under the wing of Mr Miagi, a karate expert. With lots of hard work he overcomes the bullies faced in his path, and wins a major Karate tournament in the area where he defeats his new found enemies.

The following films in the trilogy follow the same formulas for success. Although they have the very similar 80's cliched storyline to eachother, they do not lose their own individual appeal. Picture and sound quality are very good transfers of the originals...

A Must-Have!

4.0 out of 5 stars What A Brilliant Trilogy!, 10 Aug 2003
By no1filmaddict (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Unfortunatly, this is not my favourite DVD trilogy, however its is definatly the best set of Karate movies ever and i would recomend them to anyone. John G Avildsen gives them the same magic that he did with Rocky.

The Karate Kid - Ralph Macchio plays Daniel Larusso, a new kid on the block who is targeted by the Cobras, a local gang of Karate students, when he strikes up a relationship with Ali(Shue), the Cobra leaders ex - girlfriend. Eager to fight back, but unable to face them, Daniel asks handyman Mr Miyagi to train him the martial arts, which he agrees to. Now is Daniels chance to beat them and prove that he can beat them.

The Karate Kid 2 - Having won the tornement Daniel accompanies his wise mentor Mr Miyagi to his homeland, Okinawa, where his father is dieing. However, Miyagies return re-ignites a hatred between him and his best friend Sato. Daniel is also caught in the cross fire and is forced to fight Sato's best student for his honour and his life.

The Karate Kid 3 - When Daniel is instructed by his wise mentor Mr Miyagi he becomes the target from yet another cobra Kai student, Mike Barnes(Kanan) who wants to win the title back. However, when Mikes' threats become blackmail, Daniel has no choice but to compete and unfortunatly his best friend Mr Miyagi will not teach him. Realizing that he cannot win the tornement with help, daniel turns to Karate instructor Terry Silver(Griffith) who teaches the opposite to Miyagi. However, when he realizes that his new instructor and Mike, are working together with old enemy Kreese(Kove), in a master plan for revenge he turns back to Miyagi, who is a little more sympathetic now that Kreese is involved.

These three films are much more than just high kicking and strong punching, they show so may emotions so even if you don't really like martial arts or action movies this film is still worth watching and deserves a place on your shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true lesson in the art of film making !!!!!!!!!!, 23 Oct 2002
The Karate Kid series are not only very good films, but they are also very goods lessons in the art of Karate-do. Any Karateka (practioner of katae-do) will tell you how accurate the details in the film are. The lessons Mr Miyagi gives Daniel are true to real life. Insperational film that everyone should see at least once.
