Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Let's cut to the chase. Stable Masters is not the Championship Manager 00/01 of horse racing, no matter how hard it tries to be. But it is still a diverting strategy game, which, though it lacks polish and possibly long-term appeal, still provides a decent run for fans of the sports management genre.

As you'd expect, you breed, buy, train and race your horses, attempting to build up a stable of money winners by carefully matching the right horse to the right race, and--what the heck--having a flutter on the side too. Fairly easy to get to grips with, not easy to win, Stable Masters is a reasonable day out at the races, but not much more than that. --Simon Brew

4.0 out of 5 stars Stable Masters, 14 May 2002
By A Customer
Definitely one for horse racing buffs. I've followed horses for years (and years) and can finally chuck away Totopoly (anyone remember that?). You're the owner/trainer of five (to start with) horses of varying ability and it is your task to assess what they are capable of. That is frustrating because you don't really have much information, so you have to get out there and compete. However, the clues are there: Going preference (very important), level of fitness and constitution (ie how long horse takes to recover from a race). Value can be had with choosing a less well known jockey, they seem to be a bit hungrier for success! And, once you've teamed up with a winning jockey, it is best to keep him and book early! Bit annoying that sometimes you enter a horse in a race and find out your jockey is to carry lots of overweight which presumably does make a difference in the 'programme' of the game. The TV picture of the race is a bit disappointing, given the realistic graphics of most other games and the races you can enter are a bit repetitive. I would love to have an updated version and, possibly, a round course and jumping. There are lots of spelling mistakes in horse names and jockeys but apparently the patch (available) solves most of these. It is a great game - because there is no comparison, yet. Can they bring out an updated, improved, version. Hope so. But I'm not sure it will appeal to anyone who is not already interested in horse racing...

5.0 out of 5 stars More addictive than Tetris, 4 Dec 2002
By CR10 (Bath, UK) - See all my reviews
There are some games which you can play and time will disolve before you. This is one such game, once you are started you will find it hard to stop as you strive to complete - and win - the next race. As Manager games go its fairly simple to understand, keep your horses fit and healthy, train your 2 year olds to become masters and watch the cash roll in. It does depend on luck but if you can spot a good buy in an auction you can have a horse make you £10 million easy. I had a horse, now sadly retired, which made me over £20 million and set me up for life. But once one era is over you move onto the next with the latest crop of young'uns. It would have been nice to have a "Hall of Fame" where all the decent horses go once retired, just for memory. There are other problems, spelling mistakes and jockey stupidity are all corrected in the patch (get it straight away as you can't use your save games on it.) If you buy this game make sure you have a couple of hours free (a train journey is excellent) and you will be rewarded. It is a refreshing change from the latest games which require a top of the range graphics card and bucket loads of RAM.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad......., 29 Jan 2002
By Jamie Reeve (Birmingham, England) - See all my reviews
This game is only really going to appeal to people who are into racing. I am - and thoroughly enjoyed playing it for many weeks, but the novelty does fade. You tend to either really struggle or happen upon 1 great horse who sets your stable up forever. The training/jockey bookings/horse feed etc. don't seem to have any great effect on the horses. If it's a crap horse, it'll still be crap with Dettori on board! Nice idea, and a sequel could be brilliant......
