5.0 out of 5 stars outstandingly fresh, 1 Mar 2004
By A Customer
originally released on vinyl, recorded in 1954. But has the authentic tone to which the modern ear is accustomed. Rita Streich a much more commanding Queen of the Night on record than ever she was on stage. Haefliger, Stader, Fischer-Dieskau. The musical numbers are broken up with excerpts of dialogue but it still fits on a single disc.

2.0 out of 5 stars the age of this recording shows, 2 Jun 2005
By A Customer
I bought this recording on the strength of other recordings I had heard from this label. However, I was disappointed. The age of the recording really does show. I am aware that it has been remastered but somehow the sound is still fighting its way through some foreground noise, exactly what I am not sure. It lacks the clarity I have heard from other recordings, like the superb Gardiner effort. Possibly it was the style 30 years ago, but I also thought that the singing, particularly the showcase arias of the queen, were ruined by the sort of coy vibrarto that one associates with 40s music hall. This is considered a classic recording, but I found the whole production laboured. For those of you out there who have yet to buy a copy of the magic flute I recommend buying the immense and very powerful JH Gardiner edition, tuning the volume up and letting the experience wash over you. This one had me cringing from half way through the overture. The extra cash for the archiv recording is definitly worth spending.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Opera, 24 May 2004
By D. Arnold - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I, a novice, just stumbled upon this as part of an excercise to enlighten myself prior to an evening at Adrian Noble's directorial debut at Glyndebourne. What a thrill! Blimey but isn't Opera great? I've heard that it's not always so, and hesitate to recommend the whole genre but, wow, if the evening of Saturday 29th May 2004 is any thing like this extraordinary CD is then I'll be well chuffed.
