2.0 out of 5 stars A pale shadow of one of the greatest American musicals, 20 Feb 2004
By A Customer
I was very much looking forward to seeing a new version of perhaps R&H's greatest work. The 1958 version is not without its faults - for example the excessive use of colour filters can be distracting. Nevertheless Logan's film as a whole is magnificently produced, looks beautiful, and well captures the mood of James Mitchener's original- snatched moments of happiness under pinned by nostalgia, war and loss. It is well cast and well sung ( Juanita Hall as Bloody Mary was a member of the original Broadway cast and the rest are well up to standard although de Becque and Cable were dubbed by others).
Sadly the new version is far from the equal of the earlier film, still less a replacement. It is generally poorly sung. De Becque's songs were written specifically for an operatic bass- "Some Enchanted Evening" arguably the greatest single song in American musicals would still benefit I believe from being performed as the composer intended ,and not palely crooned.Even Harry Connick (Joe Cable) who at least looks the part doesn't quite capture the transcendent joy of "Younger than Springtime" but then his Liat lacks the transfixing beauty and innocence of France Nuyen in the earlier film. But the greatest and fatal weakness is the casting of Glenn Close as Nellie. She is undoubtedly a fine actor including musical theatre (as for example in Sunset Boulevard)but she was badly advised here. She is frankly and obviously far too old for the part thus making a nonsense of chunks of the dialogue and plot and much too experienced and knowing to be the naive "little hick" from Little Rock!
This screen portrayal of South Pacific looks and feels very much like the economy version but it is no bargain. Look elsewhere for the music. There are several excellent versions on CD including the 1949 Broadway cast led by Ezio Pinza and Mary Martin, and the 1958 film soundtrack as well as more complete modern recordings which all do the superb score full credit. As a film there is still only one viable version even if it is more than 45 years old. Joshua Logan, all is forgiven!

4.0 out of 5 stars Both versions have their say, 17 Jan 2007
By Mr. John R. Bradford (GOSPORT, Hampshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I like both versions of this great musical. The earlier one I equate with the stage musical, having more to say musically, but with less punch in the anti-racist message (though it is there, of course); The later version gets closer to James Mitchener's original anti-racial message given in "Tales of the South Pacific", on which the musical is based. I also think it has a fresher, South Seas ambience to it. There is more military realism, too. One wouldn't expect the earlier version to be surpassed, musically; therefore I don't find the later version disappointing, rather a most enjoyable contrast. And the music is still very good....

5.0 out of 5 stars the newer the version, the better., 15 Jul 2004

South Pacific (2001) is far the best version out of all of them.
This one has more laughter in it.The acting is more enthusiastic. Also the singing is superb.
My favourite character is 'Bloody Mary'. She has me in stitches. Her character is so enjoyable and she has such a happy face.
Glenn Close really show cases her vocals in this. They are phenomenal. Also bringing harry connick jnr into the picture is great. He has such a jazzy frank sinatra voice. And he looks pretty hot.
This film is a gotta have movie! It will have you in tears at one moment and stomache ache because of laughter at the next.
I think that this film can be watched by any age and anyone would enjoy it. It has everything from comedy to war!
This may sound a bit wierd but it's nice for just a chill out night with ya boyfriend or girlfriend. Snuggled up on the couch, a blanket, very close, chinese and a nice bottle of wine!
BUT THIS IS NO FILM 4 A GIRLY PAMPER NIGHT IN, NOOOOOOO WAYYYY!
So anyone whoes interested i'm positive that you'll love it.
Don't lisen 2 what that other person from the UK had to say.
They don't have a clue what there talking about.
So trust me on this you've gotta have THIS VERSION.

3.0 out of 5 stars disappointing remake
This version is nothing compaired to the original, visually lacking in atmosphere,as it was filmed in Australia, rather than on a Pacific island. Read more
