4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent 'semi-compilation' for Japan completists, 1 Feb 2002
By A Customer
I first bought Assemblage on tape back in 1986, four years or so after Japan's split. It's a strange kind of album, featuring the better songs from their first two patchy albums plus an array of singles released following their switch from EMI to Virgin. These include an decent cover of the Supremes' I Second That Emotion (which was a #9 hit in 1981) plus the classic pop single Life In Tokyo, produced by Giorgio Moroder.

However, the earlier tracks are of most interest here. We all know that Japan's first two albums were, at best, pretty inconsistent affairs. Nevertheless, the best of these tracks, namely the reggae-esque anti-apartheid number Rhodesia, the edgy State Line, the punk-pop of Communist China, a sanitised and synthesised version of Adolescent Sex and the sublime Suburban Berlin are all present and correct, showing that even during their questionable 'glam-punk' era (that's the best description I can come up with) they could still produce a serious punch when they wanted to. Japan were never really an image-conscious band like most of their inferior contemporaries (ie, the likes of New Romantic bands such as Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and Visage etc) and just quietly got on with the job of making unique music such as this 'assemblage' of tracks (they were one of the few bands that actually got better as their career progressed). This album therefore cuts out the dross of their earlier releases and really does concentrate on the quality songs and is thus worth investing in if you want to get into the sound of Japan as they would like to be heard now.

It's just a pity that a wholesale compilation of Japan's finest work has never been released, to cover their releases from 1978 to 1991 (when briefly re-formed as Rain Tree Crow), as the market is littered with cheap and trashy collections which do them no justice whatsoever. We wait and wonder......
