"Turkish rock 1966-1975"? Is there such a thing? You could be forgiven for being a little sceptical. But you'd be wrong... As it turns out, Turkish musicians were every bit as caught up in the whole 60s cultural revolution as their western counterparts, although it took a little longer for Turkish rock to really come of age. And this CD collects the pick of the crop for your edification, hits as well as obscurities. The earlier tracks consist of predictable Shadows-style instrumentals, but the collection soon heads into completely unfamiliar musical territory, as the Turkish musicians abandon following in the footsteps of their western role-models in favour of attempting to create a genuinely Turkish blend of rock music. It's particularly interesting as this was the era when everybody, from the Beatles down, was attempting to infuse a little eastern exotica into their music - the Turkish groups approach it from the other direction, taking their traditional sounds and westernising them, but the end result is similar. Prepare yourself for something genuinely new yet somehow familiar as Istanbul's most creative artists mix mad Hendrix-style fuzz guitar with traditional Anatolian melodies, or 70s wah-wah funk with Egyptian belly-dance music. I could go on, but suffice to say I bought this CD about 2 years ago, and it's hardly been off the turntable since.
