Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Not until the release of the Game Boy Advance has a portable console had the raw horsepower to create a convincing 3-D racer. Unfortunately, the developers behind Top Gear GT Championship seem to be blissfully unaware of this fact, and their creation really fails to impress.

Top Gear GT Championship is a simulation of the All Japan Grand Touring Car Championship, and as such contains all the official cars and drivers--which are totally unknown to anyone outside of Nippon. This is the least of the game's problems, though, because quite frankly it looks and controls like a rather sickly donkey. Although the graphics look good in static screenshots the road effect doesn't have the whizzy "mode 7" 3-D effect that titles such as Konami Krazy Racers and GT Advance use. Instead the road just sort of scrolls towards you out of the ether, very much in the style of old 80s coin-ops.

There are a useful number of ways to customise your vehicle before the race and there are some reasonably impressive weather effects, but unfortunately it's not enough to save things. In short you'd be much better off getting GT Advance, which is much, much, better than this. --David Jenkins

Manufacturer's Description

GT Championship replicates six of the best courses from the famous All Nippon track and features some of the fastest models of car and the most celebrated teams. Your aim is to race your way from the ranks of the GT300 to GT500, taking on the world's best drivers in Quick Arcade, Championship or Time Attack modes.

Like the real GT Championship, you'll also have the ability to change the settings of your car to suit your own driving style and gain an advantage over the competition. The advanced Driver AI system also recreates 15 different types of driving behaviour, which is projected against the opposition and dictates the way they drive against each other. Typical car behaviour has also been replicated; in GT Championship, the true movement of a car as it accelerates up a hill or brakes suddenly has been reproduced, pushing the quality of a handheld racing game to new extremes.

1.0 out of 5 stars Probably the worst racing game ever, 27 Dec 2001
I've been playing racing games since "Pit Stop 2" on the Commodore 64 up to "GT3" on the PS2, and this is one of the worst racing games I have ever had the misfortune to play.

The cars handle like bricks - they're either going straight, or they're jerking to the side. You don't get a sense of actually steering the car, like you do with most modern race games.

If you wanted something to compare it to, I'd say it's slightly worse than Sega's old "Super Hang-On".

Thank heavens it was a present. If I'd paid money for this, I'd kick myself. If YOU'RE unfortunate enough to receive this - do not unwrap it! Demand the receipt and take it back to the shop!

I quite literally cannot believe any software house would have the cheek to inflict such an awful game upon an innocent public.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice for the first week then tediously boring, 3 Sep 2001
This was the first game that I got, I was impressed at first, mainly blown away by the graphics of the console. After about a week of playing i never touch the game again. The problems were;

1. It takes about 5-10 mins per race, way to long 2. The cars handling is so unrealistic. 3. Once you doe one race youve done them all.

I suggest buying decent games like tony hawks (amazing!!) bomberman and F-zero.

If youve bought it go and trade it in for something else like I did!

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolute rubbish, 10 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Just in case you've read a review of GT Advance, THIS ISN'T IT. Okay, so it's my own mistake buying the wrong one, but online it's a bit tricky telling which is GT Advance Championship and which is GT Advance Touring Championship.

If you thought Pole Position was the height of racing game evolution then you'll still be disappointed with this. Just don't bother. The graphics are laughable, the handling is pathetic and it's just horribly dull to play.
