This review is from: Vatel [DVD] (DVD)
This is a remarkable film concerning the visit of Louis XIV to Chantilly, the home of his cousin the Prince de Condé. Condé desires to be appointed general in the upcoming war with the Dutch and employs Vatel, his Master of Ceremonies, to amaze the King. Played by Depardieu, Vatel does exactly that with feats and spectacles that amaze and delight, and in turn reveal the deeply unpleasant life of the court. This is in line with the excellent film "Ridicule". It leaves you in no doubt that life in such courts was a form of blood sport. Excellent acting, splendid players, the ending is perhaps a little weak.
