4.0 out of 5 stars Two early lovecraft adaptations., 23 April 2009
By Mr. K. Arts "keirarts" (uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Here Midnite movies presents two lovecraft adaptations from director daniel haller made for American International pictures, who had released one previous attempt at lovecraft, The Haunted Palace directed by roger corman, and were clearly trying to ape the success of the poe adaptations creating a franchise out of lovecraft.

Die Moster die!

An adaptation of the colour out of space, this movie transfers the action from arkam county providence to arkam in the english contryside as an american doctor makes his way to the dilapadated mansion of mad scientist Boris Karloff after falling in love with his daughter. After making his way across the blasted heath and with strange occurances he soon suspects things may be very wrong. Mostly this film keeps a lot of elements of lovecrafts story and is nowhere near the cut and paste job of haunted palace. Lovecraft purists will definately find fault with the film but it's a lot of fun and does well enough on the budget. Plus it's hard to write off any film with the awsome karloff in it, and he's as great as ever in this one.

The dunwich horror.
At last a lovecraft adaptation that keeps fairly close to the origional short story. Dean stockwell plays wilbur whately, who turns up at miskatonic university showing a keen interest in the necronomicon (anyone who's read lovecraft knows this is a bad sign) and sandra dee, who looks likely to make a great sacrifice to yog sothoth. The smooth talking whately invites her over to his countryside retreat in arkam county where dee falls for him and soon whately's plans begin to fall into place. While dee's role in the film is totally new and not in the main story, this is the first of aip's lovecraft adaptations that comes really close to the source material, and one suspects the bits that are changed is mainly for budgetary reasons. ( Wilbur does not change into any kind of weird creature in this) But like die monster die it's also a fun movie, with great actors and well shot.

AS per usual for midnite movies there is a distinct lack of bonus features but both movies have excellent picture quality and are presented in their correct widescreen ratio. Overall a total bargain for horror fans.
