4.0 out of 5 stars Vorsprung durch improvisation, 23 Jun 2002
Even though Spring Heel Jack's name appears on the cover of this album there are no beats or synths. This is more likely to appeal to fans of the so-called 'Blue Series Continuum' guests Matthew Shipp, William Parker, Evan Parker et al than it is to officiandos of electronica.

The album opens with the beautiful Chorale. Matthew Shipp is captured in reflective mood while Evan Parker plays the most minimal solo ever - all that's audible is his circular breathing and the tapping of the valves on his soprano sax. Spring Heel Jack juxtapose this restraint with shards of feedback and various close-miced crumples and clatters. Other highlights include Salt which starts out with the old Miles Davis forearm on all the keys chord on the organ and a swinging and tumbling rhythm section, topped off with Evan Parker's frantic gossip on helium sax solo; and Red Worm where Berne and Parker's saxes battle it out over a Talk Talk guitar and the bass note from hell.

Cynics might think that SHJ are simply making an album on the backs of the other musicians. That's certainly not the case; Coxon and Wales bring cut-and-paste studio expertise and that means they have no compunction in splicing the best bits together and leaving the cuttings on the studio floor. They also inject a lot of variety by being able to choose performances from a largish pool of musicians and also by setting up a number of different backdrops. On tracks like Red Worm they play guitars and percussion, on Interlude 1 and Medusa's Head they stick the performances through some fancy gizmos to create something new. Don't think either that it's a beginner's guide to improvised music. None of the players have tempered their performances and the effects SHJ add usually make things more uncomfortable. Improvisers are often their own worst critics, and the democracy of the genre can be more of a hindrance than a help. Having musicians who are more used to making shorter musical statements at the helm of this project is a definite plus.

Whether or not you're going to like this album depends largely depends largely on what you think of the musicians involved. Personally, I can take or leave Mat Manieri's microtonal scrapings and Daniel Carter's sax playing is nowhere near as good as his flute, but the rest of the guys are the business. Electronica fans approach with extreme caution. Improv fans, it's an interesting take on the genre, give it a go.

4.0 out of 5 stars an inspired yet neglected album., 26 Dec 2001
By A Customer
This innovative collection seems in danger of disappearing without trace and deserves wider recognition than it received in 2001. A collaboration of the former drum 'n bass outfit with a 10 strong ensemble of free-jazzers including Evan Parker and Matthew Shipp, it bypasses both the jazz and dance crowds and appears to have suffered as a result(in fact my local record 'specialists' had not even heard of it!). Acoustic improv, with some great Parker contributions, riffs off unusual and sometimes uncomfortable electro-ambience from the SHJ-duo: very free, unpredictable and disorientating.Be warned that there are no breakbeats or grooves to speak of on this, but a labyrinthine exploration of timbre and space instead, especially on the opener 'Chorale' and 'Coda'.Overall it's closer to Fire music than Fusion, and recommended to all fans of old Impulse/BYG albums who want to hear a music that still thinks forward. Not always an easy listen, but then that's the fun of it, isn't it? Check this one out before it disappears.
