5.0 out of 5 stars Glorious!, 23 Sep 2001
By Andrew Wilkinson (Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a wonderful album. It is mostly for classical guitar, but it has some lovely orchestral sections scattered throughout, and some particularly wonderful woodwind. The tunes are beautiful and emotive. Things reach a pretty spectacular finale towards the end as the guitar/orchestra interplay is boosted by pipe organ and brass. Although the album is definitely classical in flavour, the distinctive Hackett style is still present and is still reminiscent of his Genesis work - this is in many ways a natural development of albums like Wind & Wuthering. I've played this disc constantly, and it captures the mystery, romance, cheekiness and sheer joy of the play that inspired it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece from a man in form, 24 Jan 2008

If you are having friends over for dinner or want some background music to float around the room put this on then wait.... after about 2 tracks you will find that all conversation has stopped and that everyone will be fixated by this wonderful album. It is without a doubt a true clasical masterpiece and will be enjoyed by everyone who buys it. The one regret that I and many other fans have is that it was never performed live, wasn't the Albert Hall made for this album. Lets start a collection to fund it !!

3.0 out of 5 stars A midsummer's night strum on the guitar, 7 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Another foray into classical guitar by Steve Hackett and this time he is pulling out all the stops for critical acclaim from the high brow brigade.

I was expecting a seriously classical piece but was pleasantly surprised that the tracks retain some of the feel and style from Bay of Kings (and certainly the lush sound) which is to the album's credit.

Obviously a concept as such and it doesn't all work but by and large the tracks are tuneful, not too long and - importantly - not overly dominated by the orchestral elements.

Steve couldn't really get much further from his Spectral Mornings/Acolyte back catalogue with this one but it is all credit to him that it remains an enjoyable listen even to someone like me who has little time for classical music generally. You could do worse than give this a try if you fancy something a bit different but it's hard to see who the album is aimed at.
