5.0 out of 5 stars wow this really rocks 5 stars yeah, 1 Jul 2001
By A Customer
this album is just great wow its dylan covers on this one i have other byrds albums and some of the songs i already heard before but its still a really good collection all the tracks are good its taken track from many years of byrds so it has both rock n roll coutry rock n roll and folk rock n roll byrds are so good great guitar play vocals and drums singing and every thing i prefer byrds a little bit more than the beatles when byrds did something new for example coutry rock they didint forget the good rock n roll and they didint kick out any of there members they left because they wanted to. any way this is a good good album starts of with MR Tamburine man classic song wirh good backing vocals lead vocal bass guitar and drums and tamuburine this one is i can be a little bit boring to listen to after a while but still great then later on it comes a live version of that song thats a little bit harder(heavyer) bur still rock n rolling other high lights wheels of fire great rock n roll tune little bit harder but wow its good Lady lady lay alternative version might be even better alternative version has backing vocals from other members of byrds but havent got the gospel choir opening and end bit all over now baby blue good faster alternative version taken from the turn turn turn remastred cd that has this song as a bonus track. many songs its all good the coury songs are good aswell they maybe start of and first yyou might think they are boring if you are a rock n roll fan. but you will soon find ot tthat they have many swinging guitars that works really good in this byrds song. i think if you are gonna by your fist byrd album this might be the one it has songs from nearly every year of byrds music and it works very good on this collection its not even one song that dosent fit in here every song on this cd is good it s only covers on this one but that dosent matter there biggest hit was mr tamburine man and this is not just regular covers its remakes with electric guitarr bass drums etc all this makes it a good start of if you like me allready have some byrds cds its still a good collection

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb interpretations of Dylan songs, 19 Jun 2009
By Og Oggilby "Og Oggilby" (North London) - See all my reviews

The songs of Bob Dylan have always lent themselves to re-interpretation. Dylan's idiosyncratic vocal style has alienated as many as it has converted, and as such many music fans could probably compile umpteen albums worth of Dylan songs, none of which feature the man himself! The Byrds owe their commercial breakthrough to Dylan, care of the deathless 'Mr Tambourine Man', of course, which was predicated around the-then innovative notion of marrying contemporary American Folk to the Beat Combo sounds of the early Beatles - and 'Folk-Rock' was born. The chiming harmonics of Roger (or Jim, as he was at the time) McGuinn's electric twelve-string guitar and the celestial harmonies of his Byrds colleagues Gene Clark and David Crosby conspired (alongside a bunch of top LA session players, as it happens - The Byrds weren't thought to be quite good enough in the studio to cut the backing track quickly) to produce an all-time classic, from the opening guitar chimes through to the sweet fade-out.

They were up and running then, and, although within the band they proved quite capable of coming up with original material of equal strength, they frequently dipped into Dylan's songwriting catalogue, often with incredible results. To many, their interpretations of Dylan numbers such as 'All I Really Want To Do', 'Chimes of Freedom' and 'Lay Down Your Weary Tune' were the defining versions of these songs. Being a certified Bobcat myself, I like Dylan's versions as much, but there is an undeniable magic in The Byrds' recordings. Their signature 'jingle jangle' sound is such a defining and pervasive sound in contemporary music that The Byrds warrant their own chapter in Pop history. It's a constantly-rewarding pleasure to have The Byrds Dylan interpretations under one handy compact disc-sized roof, a collection that constantly rewards, and also serves the purpose of charting both Dylan and The Byrds artistic development as the 60's wore on. A thing of beauty is a joy forever, as some poet or other once said, and this album is positively littered with them. A joyous sound, and an essential purchase - for under a fiver, this is an album that will go on delivering good vibes and a winning listening experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars best covers album ever, 28 Sep 2007
By Baldman "Mikey" (Durham,England) - See all my reviews
Dylan - an icon. The Byrds - iconic. Dylans songs played by the Byrds - better than the originals - sometimes. This album originally released on vinyl nearly 30 years ago is timeless. All of the classics of the 60's have been included. No one faintly interested in rock music can fail to recognise the opening bars of Mr Tambourine Man. It keeps getting better over the remaining 19 tracks. The Byrds regularly dipped into Dylans songbook throughout their career, and here they are together on one handy disc - all jangly Rickenbacker and spot on harmonies. The Byrds took from the masters table and and created their own unique blend of lyrical and musical brilliance. This cd is a very good place to start if you are new to the Byrds to see what all of the fuss was about. Go explore.
