Amazon.co.uk Review

This huge 1993 hit for Robin Williams and director Chris Columbus (Home Alone), based on a novel called Alias Madame Doubtfire by Anne Fine, stars Williams as a loving but flaky father estranged from his frustrated wife (Sally Field). Devastated by a court order limiting his time with the children, Williams's character disguises himself as a warm, old British nanny who becomes the kids' best friend. As with Dustin Hoffman's performance in Tootsie, Williams's drag act--buried under layers of latex and padding--is the show, and everything and everyone else on screen serves his sometimes frantic role. Since that's the case, it's fortunate that Williams is Williams, and his performance is terribly funny at times and exceptionally believable in those scenes where his character misses his children. Playing Williams's brother, a professional makeup artist, Harvey Fierstein has a good support role in a bright sequence where he tries a number of feminine looks on Williams before settling on Mrs Doubtfire's visage. --Tom Keogh

5.0 out of 5 stars Williams best film by far, 6 Jul 2004
One of thoese rare films that you can watch again and again. Robin Williams plays his best role ever as a divorce Father who with the help of his make up artist brother answers an advert ( placed by his ex wife) as a housekeeper dressed as a middle aged woman- Mrs Doubtfire.
The film has to be watched again and again not so much for the film contents but it has excllent one liners that you could miss easily. The casting is by far one of the best and yet it should be up there with planes trains and automobiles as a all time classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Robin Williams...NEED I SAY MORE?, 9 Jul 2003

This film is classic! Robin Williams is at his best in this rib tickling comedy 'Mrs. Doubtfire.' The warm hearted comedy is great for everyone, from the kids to the granney and from the goldfish to the dog. Anyone who watches this film will not be disapointed with the outcome! Great Film, Great Buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic 90s movie!, 28 Mar 2005
By Ms. Hr Jackson "Hannah Jay" (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This movie is a firm favourite of mine for several reasons: firstly, I am a victim of divorce myself and I know that it causes a lot of strain on a family, especially on the children. This movie takes a light hearted view of this subject, using comedy to overshadow the emotional hot pot created by divorce.
Secondly,I've a avid Robin Williams fan. He's just one of those actors who I have yet to see in a role where I didn't find him atleast 95% convincing.I feel 'Dead Poet's Society' to be his best film, but this one comes a close second. I don't think the acting in this movie is inadequate. Even the kids are certainly not talentless in the acting department.

I have to admit I'm a sucker for sentimental movies which are often slated by critics for being 'sugary goo'(I'm a huge fan of Forrest Gump!). This movie is not overly sentimental in my eyes.I feel it's more appropiate to call it touching.
