The need for a compilation like Commercial Breaks was created because ad agencies are constantly searching for the perfect 30-second soundtrack to make their beer and jeans jump off the shelves and television now offers more standout tunes than most chart-conscious radio playlists. Once hooked on the funk groove that extols the virtues of Mercedes' diverse range of motors (Groove Armada's "If Everybody Looked The Same") or the chorus of sexual conquest that makes Tic Tacs so attractive (La Honda's "27 Women"), sourcing these familiar TV-Hits can be a nightmare. Which is why, in principle, this 2CD compilation which collects together the best of those anonymous classics is a must-have. Having started the whole trend off, it's little surprise that the best tunes come from the Levis Twisted series, with inspired tracks from Boss Hogg, Pepe Deluxe and Death In Vegas. Also welcome are the legendary likes of Gary Numan's "Cars" (American Express), Iggy Pop's "I'm Bored" (Grolsch), Moby's "Run On" (Renault) and Blondies "One Way Or Another" (Baileys). Add underground classics from Sneaker Pimps (Carling), Leftfield (Guinness) and Kinobe (Kronenbourge) and just about every musical genre and product imaginable is covered. And that's Commercial Breaks only flaw; even the most dedicated couch potato won't manage to love everything here. --Dan Gennoe
