Part of a suite of software by Steinberg called Cubase, Cubasis Notation takes the more popular functions from the scoring sections of the full range and combines them in a low-priced and simple-to-use package. It does actually do more than just scoring--it will allow you to create music by editing it in a variety of modes from graphical to full notation, thus allowing you to get ideas from your head down onto "paper" easily, even if you are just learning how to write music. It does this by using the sequencer functions that are now common on MIDI-controlled music systems and PC soundcards.

It also offers drum notation, has 4 voice polyphony on each double stave, has a wide range of layout options, contains text and lyrics capabilities and, in short, is able to produce scores for large ensembles. It also has a range of auto-layout functions that will make life easier when writing scores. One thing to note is that it isn't really for playing with samples and audio; Cubasis VST is more appropriate for that.

This software is pretty close to faultless, and almost all musicians, hobbyists or even school bands who don't have notation software already could make good use of it. --Richard Adams
