Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
The Alone in the Dark series is a gaming phenomenon, and the newest release, The New Nightmare--the fourth instalment--has made it to the PlayStation. This is more than the first and third in the series did. You might wonder whether a graphical adventure translates all that well to the PlayStation format; rest assured that in this case it does. The range of controls is perhaps a little limited in comparison to what you'd expect from a PC and actually getting the characters to move around is a bit awkward at first. But from the cinematic opening sequences right through the action, the atmosphere is suitably dark and foreboding and this makes up for any slight difficulties of gameplay. Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare is actually two games in one. Edward Carnby's best friend Charles Fiske has been found dead near Shadow Island after looking for three ancient Indian tablets. Carnby joins forces with Aline Cedrac, a university lecturer specialising in ancient Indian languages--this ability isn't the only reason she's keen to find out more about Fiske. When Aline and Edward arrive at Shadow Island they become separated and you can take the part of either character. The one you choose will dictate how you play and solve the game, so complete it one way and you still have the challenge of trying it the other. Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare is engrossing right from the word go. The puzzles start immediately and there is no let-up. Start to play this game late at night, close the curtains, turn the volume up and you won't want to stop until the mystery is solved--twice. --Sandra Vogel

Manufacturer's Description
Edward Carnby, the supernatural detective is back. And this time its for revenge. Carnby's best friend, Charles Fiske has been found dead off a mysterious island off the coast of Maine, Shadow Island. Carnby's investigation quickly leads him to Fred Johnson who informs him of Fiske's search for the three ancient tablets which, when placed in a specific location, will unlock an incredible and dangerous power. Johnson pleads with Carnby to pick up where Fiske left off and reopen the investigation in order to recover the tablets. Carnby accepts the mission to find and destroy the murderer of Fiske and avenge his death

The original survival horror franchise continues with a pure blend of intense action and suspenseful adventure. Alone in the Dark immerses the player into a dark and strange atmosphere where conventional rules do not apply. The player must overcome his natural fear of the dark unknown and control Edward Carnby through a deep and highly detailedstoryline.Armed with a flashlight and a pistol, Carnby must find the necessary items to survive as well as the clues which will help him escape his ultimate nightmare.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent game - almost!!, 1 Oct 2001
By Jacki (East Sussex) - See all my reviews
This was a really enjoyable game, and literally made me jump out of my skin at times, which added to the effect. I liked the fact that you could play the game twice, once as Carnaby and once as Aline, as they only meet up in the game every now and again. What let the game down was the camera angles - I got stuck in the lava room area because I just couldn't see the exit I needed. The ending was also a bit weak - instead of having to solve puzzles (as required for most of the game) it just became a matter of killing lots of monsters, and I didn't even have to kill Aline's boss-I just barged past it.

Generally the game was excellent, but the ending could have been given a little more thought. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good blend of Silent Hill occult plot and X-Files torch fun!, 4 Jul 2001
By A Customer
This is an amazing game. The intro sets the scene nicely and from the very beginning the atmosphere is dark and foreboding. It was refreshing to have monsters that appeared just to scare you rather than kill you! The puzzles are challenging and varied and the enemies show good AI. While it is a good game it is not better than Silent Hill. For all the talk, the plot of AITD4 is not really anything new to gamers. The game itself also lacks the consistency of Silent Hill or Resi. The final stages look and feel tacked on and the end bossses are hugely anti climatic (along with the ending). It also suffers from some bad glitches. In one level the camera angle failed to shift so I ended up lost in a wall! It is worth a look though and good fun while it lasts.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a game!!!, 21 May 2001
By Dav (London, England) - See all my reviews
This is by far the most gripping game i have played on the playstation. The sound effects and camera angles create an awesome atmosphere. It combines great playability and spectacular graphics whilst making you get so deeply involved in the plot you will be on the edge of your seat. You will find it hard to sleep with the lights off after playing this. No games collection is complete without this game.
