while only loosely a part of the mummy family this is a fun easy watch dwayne"the rock"johnson plays the title role and does a good job with the limited script.there is no attempt made to make this into anything other than a saturday afternoon movie for the kids to enjoy and as such it succeeds admirably.
the visuals are superb as is the sound quality of the blu-ray there is also a good range of special features on the disc which all add to an all round good disc and great value for the price.
so if like me you are a bit of a sad boy who has to have the whole series of movies or you just want a film that the kids can enjoy i would recommend this disc.

I've actually been surprised by how much I have enjoyed the movies in the Mummy series. They aren't great cinema, but they are fun. When The Mummy Returns set up the spin-off The Scorpion King, I put it on my must see list. But somehow I got too busy and never got around to seeing it until it was on TV recently. Turns out, I spent exactly the right amount of money on it.

In the world before the pyramids, there are many tribes at war. But Memnon (Steven Brand) is uniting them by force. Unfortunately, most of the tribes don't welcome the occupation that goes with it. Memnon is unstoppable, however, thanks to his seer Cassandra (Kelly Hu).

Into this mix comes Mathayus (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson). Mathayus is one of the final Acadians and an assassin. He is hired to kill Cassandra. Complications ensue, however, when Cassandra sees him coming. (You think he would have thought of that.) Can Mathayus stay alive long enough to complete the job?

Being a spin off of the Mummy films, I wasn't expecting much. And yet this film managed to not meet those standards. What makes the other films work is their high octane action. This movie was seriously lacked that. The story moved along slowly and predictably, which certainly didn't help things either. One or two surprises along the way would have been nice.

This movie is nothing but an excuse for action sequences and sword fights. There were plenty of action scenes, but they weren't anything we haven't seen before.

No time is spent developing the characters. They are only there to serve the story. Frankly, I think that was one of my problems with the film.

In the Mummy films, there is a great sense of humor.

In an ancient time, predating the pyramids, King Memnon is using the psychic powers of his sorceress Cassandra to for tell his great victories.

In a last ditch effort to stop Memnon from taking over the world, the leaders of the remaining free tribes hire the assassin Mathayus to kill the sorceress.

But Mathayus ends up getting much more than he bargained for.

Now with the help of the trickster Arpid, tribal leader Balthazar and an unexpected ally, it's up to Mathayus to fulfill his destiny and become the great Scorpion King.....

A silly spin off of an even sillier movie, The Scorpian King is by the numbers Conan piffle, but it does show that Dwayne Johnson had very good screen presence, even though the script is dire.

Russell is a good director, and knows how to handle a high concept movie, but here he loses the plot.....and then some.

So what we are left with is Johnson and the great film writer Grant Heslov walking around the desert, bickering, having fights, bickering some more, and chasing after the cut price Sean Pertwee.

There isn't any urgency in the movie, the set pieces are lethargic, and Kelly Hu's hair is always in the wrong place.

It's the Fast and the Furious of sword and sandals movies, and it just plods on and on, until the predictable finale.

If your a fan of Johnson, forget this, and start with The Rundown, at least it's fun.

Since THE SCORPION KING is DWAYNE (THE ROCK) JOHNSON'S first movie he starred in after putting his wrestling life on hold, it turned out pretty good. I know that some people have a born talent for doing best acting like SYLVESTER STALLONE, JEAN-CLAUDE VAN DAMME, AND BRUCE WILLIS in action pack movies. THE ROCK is one of them because his performance really shows his physical and emotional character coming out of the big screen when you watch him in this movie. He really brings out the best of THE SCORPION KING, ALL HAIL TO THE ALMIGHTY!!!

This blu-ray is sharp and looks good. Story wasn't what I expected though, as the history of the Scorpion King is totally different when referred to in the Mummy-series. I missed Egypt, and found this movie to be a bit shallow, although it was an OK action flick.

A curious thing is that the button for entering "extras information" while watching the film, would not go away when I played this blu-ray on my last blu-ray-player, a Samsung BD-P2500. No problem with that button while using Oppo BDP-83 SE or Onkyo DV-BD507.
