5.0 out of 5 stars Another Masterpiece by the Master Miyazaki, 14 May 2004
By Steven Chapman "steve_142" - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I remembered this film when it was shown on TV in the late 1980s, I recollected small parts of it, like the lush colours, the airships, the floating island and the robot. It took literally YEARS for me to find out what film it was once I had grown up. Once the internet came to full fruition, I discovered that Laputa was the film which captured my imagination as a child. At that time, there was no indication that the film was to be released in VHS form (DVDs were a rarity!). But now all that has changed, and Miyazaki's collection has made its way onto the scene. And they couldn't have come too soon!

Laputa takes you into Miyazaki's inventive and imaginative world of steam and air, a world that seems far preferable to our own. The young heroin plays his (and her) parts again, as the re-curring theme in all of Miyazaki's creations, but in doing so, it allows his films to touch your own inner-child.

Although not quite as encompassing and thorough as some of his later work, such as Spirited Away, Laputa serves up adequate action and adventure to keep adult and infant alike amused. I leant this DVD to a colleague to show her daughter, and when she brough it back to me, she said that she really enjoyed the film herself, and her daughter thought the film was "lovely!".

So there you have it. A "lovely" film.

Get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars More please, 29 Jan 2004
By P. Sanders "prhsuk" (Belfast) - See all my reviews

Like many others, I caught this film on TV years ago and enjoyed it, but only remembered fragments. I'd heard a lot about it since, and after seeing "My Neighbour Totoro" and "Spirited Away" I wanted to check out more of Hayao Miyazaki's films.

This is a lovely film. There are various set-pieces, each one building up the excitement and wonder of the movie. With its mix of rural landscapes, early industrial towns and futuristic technology, this film has a unique feel. The robots in particular are wonderfully expressive, yet virtually faceless. Miyazaki animates his characters with subtle physical nuances that help them seem more real somehow.

Now, I don't remember the original English dub, but I've seen plenty of terrible English anime tracks in my time. I think this one is actually pretty good - James van der Beek in particular surprised me - I thought he brought a lot of character to Pazu, making him very likable. Yes I would like a chance to watch it in the original Japanese with proper subtitles - it is annoying that neither of the two English tracks matches the Japanese. However I do feel the English language version has the better soundtrack - especially the prison battle scene. The music in this film is gorgeous and moving.

It's about time more Miyazaki films were released on Region 2 - I haven't seen "Porco Rosso" yet. And it's criminal that "My Neighbour Totoro" - one of the best animated films I've ever seen - is still unavailable (and please, both English and Japanese with decent subtitles!).

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolutely Joyfull adventure, 30 May 2005
I first saw this film in 1990, in Japanese with no subtitles. I didn't even know what it was called but I was entranced by what I saw on the screen. I recently got a gift of this movie with english subtitles and was just as mesmerized this time around. This movie is a joy to behold, an innocent romantic adventure involving the search for a legendary city in the sky and the people who would exploit the power contained therein, and those who would protect it.

This film is filled with wonderful characters, from the miners to the sky pirates, who are rich with depth and feeling. The two leads, a miner boy whose father once glimpsed the legendary city of Laputa and the girl who descended from the rulling family of Laputa, are warm and believable, and their race to find the city before the greedy military do is an exciting tale.

This film is a masterpiece. Do not miss it.
