Instant Brasillian Classic, 30 Jan 2002
Their brand of vibrant Brazillian rhythms and charming vocals, both in English & (I guess)Portuguese are a must hear and could be listened to at any time of the day in any place, under any atmosphere, it doesn't take a Rio carnival or sun kissed beach with barefoot football playing locals to make this music sound good. 'Something New' featured on the Warp Factor 3 compilation a few months back and reviewed on Souljunkie in September is a great percussion and flute led bossa providing the perfect introduction to the album. It's buzzing carnival rhythms matched by the energy of Azhar's vocals. The title track 'Posto Nove', named after a section of the infamous Ipanema beach is a delicious samba that again features some dreamy scat vocalling floating lighter than a feather on the breeze. 'Felicidade' builds a percussive & drum intro which I was just expecting to burst into a frenzied whistle blowing batucada, but no I've obviously been listening to too much Snowboy because this pleasantly surprises & turns out to be a much more 'gentle' piece of magic, sprinkled with flute & summery vocals. Whether or not we need another version of 'Batucada' is soon forgotten when the first line kicks in & the band break out into that all too familiar standard and anyway, I know I would want to hear this at any live gig because it's an absolute classic and jam packed with energy. An absolute monster of a tune, 'Savage World' should get picked up by the jazz dance crowd and ditto 'Fallen Angel' which sets down a pulsating rhythm to a jumping beat. Combine this with a catchy hook and it has all the neccessary ingredients to make this a Y2K+1 anthem. The quality doesn't let up throughout, just check out the sax on 'Influencia Do Jazz' and the soul on 'Prima Vera', such an intense & beautiful song that closes out the set. Most of the tracks are penned by the obviously hugely talented Joe (ZE) Cavanagh and songstress Azhar, the band are tight and the production faultless making this a truely fantastic album. Rating..10/10 (That's right)
