Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Sopranos around the world will be itching to test-drive the Gloria, the extraordinary Handelian rediscovery made just months before this recording. But how many will come close to Emma Kirkby's immaculate performance here? Although known of for many years, this showpiece work was only established as being by Handel in early 2001, to worldwide press headlines. The opportunity to make the first recording was both an honour and a daunting, spectacular challenge. The coloratura range, mood spectrum (from the elation of the opening to the deeply-felt Qui Tollis) and the sheer helter-skelter of the closing Cum Sancto Spiritu, make demands of the highest order. These are met by Kirkby, at the peak of her powers, in the most captivating fashion. The voice is set in natural space, excellently supported by Laurence Cummings and the accomplished baroque orchestra of London's Royal Academy of Music and supplemented by the likes of distinguished violinist Simon Standage. The coupling on the CD is logical--a companion work from Handel's early years, the startlingly daring and colourful Dixit Dominus. The 1986 performance (of some merit) comes from the BIS back-catalogue with the choicest most ravishing moments coming from Anne Sofie von Otter's short contribution. --Andrew Green

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings, 29 Jul 2001
I have mixed feelings about this CD. It is good to have a new Handel find - particularly when it is as well recorded and performed as this, but the rest of the CD (a re-issue of a 1986 recording of Dixit Dominus) is, frankly, very disappointing.

Emma Kirkby is in fine voice in the Gloria and is more than equal to the virtuosic demands of the music. I don't think I have ever heard her sound so good on record. The RAM Baroque Orchestra provides sterling support. So, five stars here for the work itself and the performance.

However, far fewer stars for the rest of the disc. The filler (a re-issue of Dixit Dominus) is a let-down. I suspect BIS were struggling to find a suitable work in their back catalogue with which to pair the Gloria. Apart from Anne Sophie von Otter's brief contribution, the rest of the performance is, in my opinion, uninspiring. There are better recordings of the work.

The total duration of the disc is only just over 49 minutes. At full price, that really isn't competitive in an age when virtually all new releases or re-issues have 60-70 minutes of music.

I suspect it won't be too long before someone else records the Gloria (several well known names have been rumoured), on a CD which is rather more generous in length. It may be better to wait.

4.0 out of 5 stars A benchmark account of Handel's 'Gloria', 4 Jun 2002
By Simon Barrow (Exeter, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Emma Kirby's radiant performance on the premiere recording of Handel's rediscovered 'Gloria' is well worth the entrance price. The Royal Academy's Baroque Orchestra also give a strong performance, albeit one lacking the richer tones of John Eliot Gardiner's period ensemble on the Philips (462 597-2) recording which appeared a couple of months later. By Handel's standards this a fairly straight setting of a traditional text, but all the expected flourishes, trills, sustains and extended runs are there to add the colour we would expect. The outcome is a splendid combination of required simplicity and appropriate elaboration.

Gardiner's 'Dixit Dominus' is superior to the well-known archive one on this recording, which comes across a little flat. It would have been good if the Academy could have produced a third Handel work to supplement the 'Gloria' - perhaps a Motet like 'Saeviat tellus inter rigores' or the Psalm 'Nisi Dominus'. Gardiner tags on the Vivaldi 'Gloria' instead. But it is something of a curious afterthought, and given the choice of the two I would definitely plump for this CD if it is the Handel you are after.

A couple of other recordings have become available since this release and the Philips one. The Gottingen Handel Festival Edition is a live recording from their 3 June 2001 gala performance with Dominique Labelle, soprano, the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, and conductor Nicholas McGegan. And the Baroque Academy of Montreal offer another period instrument rendition on Atma Classique (ACD2 2215), accompanied by the Bach and Vivaldi settings. However, Emma Kirby remains the benchmark.
