5.0 out of 5 stars Vivaldi Seasons+Stunning sound in DVD-Audio, 4 April 2004
By Dan Fee "music fan aka drdanfee" (Berkeley, CA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Many approaching the option of getting this dvd-audio disc may start where I started, facing the store bins: Do I need yet another performance of this ubiquitous Vivaldi hit? The archivist in me said, no. The high-resolution thrill seeker in me said, yes. When I noted that the price was low, it seemed like a good bet for curiosity's sake.

Just a few minutes into the disc confirmed my delight and my surprise.

First of all, the sound is absolutely stunning. The surround sound mix tends to put you right in the middle of the orchestra, and the richness of all those strings is captured without the slightest hint of shrillness or glassiness or any of the other detractions we have sometimes come to expect from lower-resolution, 16-bit recording techniques. All you get in this version is music, music, music ... in such stunning vividness that you might find it difficult not to let the whole thing play through, right to the end, first spin.

The performances are brilliant and lovely, by turns. Vivaldi is being played on modern violins here, but in a chamber orchestra-sized scale that fits just right into the venue. The players acquit themselves without apology to period instrument bands who have also recorded this famous Vivaldi set of concertos; and while I do not see myself forsaking such bright stars in the firmament as Il Giardino Armonico (for example), this one earns its own place on the shelf.

If Naxos keeps up this kind of quality of sound with performance on other DVD-audio releases in the future, that label will quickly extend its solid reputation as a front-runner into the high-resolution sectors of the market.

Highly recommended, with five stars like rocket fireworks for all the sheer musicality of the sound that will be pouring out of your speakers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good performances, great sound, 2 Mar 2004
By A Customer
Recordings of the Four Seasons are two-a-penny. But this one deserves to be noticed for two reasons.

The performance steers a neat line between period and modern performances - lith and rhythmically infectious, with great orchestral and solo playing.

The sound (in DTS surround) is as clear as a bell - the church acoustic sounding almost tangible. For the other works on the disc - for two orchestras - the second orchestra is placed behind you, with the soloist in between your front and rear speakers. Great fun!

A very enjoyable disc - a bargain at the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW, 1 Feb 2004
By Mr Martyn Lewis (Abrgavenny, Monmouthshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This is a wonderfull album. The 5.1 will emerse you and bring a tear to your eye. Turn it up loud!! I've never listened to this kind of music before, but listing to this is incredible. If you like classical music this album is a must, with so many well known songs it's like the best cristmas cracker you've ever pulled. Track 9 is, in my opinion, the best track of all. The bass will shake the pictures of the wall. If your not a fan of classical this is the best introduction into it. If you dont like this you probably won't like any other classical (maybe).
Sorry about the poor spelling.
Martyn Lewis
