This fascinating disc contrasts William Walton's two works for string quartet, one written in 1947 at the height of his popularity and the other completed in 1922 when he was a young man of 20. For the latter, the Emperor Quartet uses Walton's autograph score which contains a number of differences from the one published by OUP. In justification of this decision the cellist William Schofield writes, "What emerged was a more confident and more experimental work than we had anticipated. Walton in 1920 sounds more modern than Walton in 1940". It's true: the earlier work is bolder, rougher and more harmonically daring, while the later is more winsome and traditionally structured--though, interestingly, both contain fugues. The Emperors play both works with intelligence and insight, delivering the fugal writing with exemplary clarity and the more lyrical passages with sweet-toned warmth. If you put the disc in your PC CD-ROM drive, it links to a dedicated Web site which contains slightly fuller liner notes, updated information about the Emperor Quartet and tour dates, and audio snippets of other works in the Black Box catalogue.
