Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

If you use a PC, you almost certainly use the Office productivity suite. Word 2002 is the word-processing package in Microsoft's new version--Office XP. XP includes all the familiar packages: Excel, FrontPage, Powerpoint, Outlook and Access as well as Word. But new features across the range, such as Task Panes, Smart Tags and integrated e-mail, aim to make the various applications more tightly integrated than ever as a package, and squeeze that much more functionality out of each of the programs. Task Panes are dynamic windows that pop up in response to specific actions you're performing within a document--suggesting, formatting or mail merge options, for example. Smart Tags, similarly, are icons that appear when you perform a particular task: hover over them and a dropdown menu appears.

Smart Tags really come into their own in Word 2002.Hover your mouse over a contact name in a letter, and the menu allows you to send them an e-mail, open your contacts book in Outlook, refer to outstanding diary commitments and so on. This is joined-up organisation of the best kind; in effect you're using Web-page-style hotlinks to hop from your Word document around your office suite.

There is only so much you want to change in a word processing package, which is for quickly and simply writing documents, after all. But the ability to select unconnected chunks of text (so you could cut and paste two unconnected paragraphs in one go); the Reveal Formatting Task Pane, which lets you see all the formats and styles on a given selection; and the Drawing Canvas, which allows much finer positioning of pictures within a document than before, are all excellent innovations. --John Rennie

Manufacturer's Description

Microsoft Word 2002 gives users the tools they need to streamline the process of creating, sharing, reviewing, and publishing their important documents. Word 2002 makes it easier for users to discover and use existing functionality and provides intelligent new ways for users to work with their documents. Word 2002 now makes it easier for users to share and review documents with others without changing the way they currently work. Discover and use more of the new and existing functionality in the application. New tools such as Task Panes and Smart Tags are shared throughout the Microsoft Office suite. Built into Word 2002 is improved technology for working with formatting, styles, bullets, tables of contents, and more.

AutoCorrect Options Smart Tags provides an easy mechanism for users to control and modify automatic behavior that takes place within Word. Undo an automatic correction, choose to not have that correction take place in the future, or access the AutoCorrect Options dialog box. With Name, Address, and Date Smart Tags, Word 2002 recognizes names, addresses, and dates. When an item is recognized, the user is provided with a Smart Tag that allows them to obtain additional information from the Web or other Office applications. Additional Smart Tags will be available on the Office Update Web site and can be extended by organizations and third parties to offer unique document solutions. Word 2002 now gives users the ability to translate words in their document (available languages are determined by language dictionaries that are installed) or to access a translation service on the Web. This service provides entire document translation as well as additional languages. Word 2002 now increases user productivity by supplementing traditional mouse and keyboard execution with voice commands. Users can dictate text, make direct formatting changes, and navigate menus using speech and voice commands. (Note: Speech is currently available for U.S. English, simplified Chinese, and Japanese.) The Word Count toolbar allows users to easily update the word count in a document without having to go to the Word Count dialog box. Additional improvements in Word Count allow users more flexibility in whether headers and footers are counted in their document.

1.0 out of 5 stars More of the same from Microsoft..., 25 Mar 2003

For those who don't already have a word processor, then yes, if you buy this product (and can afford it!), you may find it useful. But you should be warned that it will eat up a ridiculous amount of computer resources; that it comes equipped with all sorts of arcane extras that you'll probably never need, discover, or understand; and that it has a built in 'intelligence' that - until you learn how to turn it off - will consistently 'help' you by screwing up every document you're working on.

In spite of which, it *still* won't do some basic stuff that you'll find in other word processors - perhaps that's because Microsoft don't want to hurt the sales of another of their programs (Publisher).

And if you already have a word processor - especially if you have a previous version of WORD, you don't need this.

Wouldn't it be nice if software manufacturers learned that we don't really want wordprocessors that do everything except make tea and do the housework?

Wouldn't it be nice if they produced a lean, mean program that did did what you need without filling your hard drive with junk?

Perhaps one day they'll offer a word processor that processes words, at a reasonable price, perhaps with separately purchased plug-ins for those who like word processors that can play music and chess, and indulge in intelligent conversation...

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect is the Word!, 3 Sep 2001

Word 2002 is a massive improvement over previous versions. The Smart Tags really do prove helpful when it comes to managing contacts; it makes life so much easier, you'll wonder how you managed to live without it sometimes :-)

The cut and paste option is also massivly improved allowing easier selections to be made, which I've always wondered why was never implemented last time.

Many of the other features are present, which is a major plus. Options such as spellcheck, print preview and the templates remain (although with more flexibilty).

The install procedure was a breeze. It worked first time! I was up and running after about 7 mins. So no complaints there either!

I suppose the only slight downside is the "Americanisms" although that may just be past versions rubbing off on me...

Still, an excellent product, well worth it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good enough as it goes., 23 April 2003

I see relatively little point in the 2002 upgrade from the earlier version of Word.
Point in its favour, for those with such interests as mine: the expansion of the symbols section, including even archaic Greek (e.g the digamma and even the san/sanpi and qoppa letters). For those with my interests, this deserves high praise. However, Wordperfect had this feature long ago.
Point not in its favour: the low level of clipboard function. To cut/copy and paste from another application, including the net and e-mail, is practically impossible. Within Word itself, the clipboard is usable, but not in association with anything else. A file must be "translated" by the Word function for it to be usable within Word. This contrasts - again - with Wordperfect, which shows no such difficulty. Practically any verbal file may be transferred instantly to the clipboard here and employed without difficulty.
For someone who works much with verbal material, this is a genuine difficulty. For preference and convenience, I have returned to Wordperfect as my regular WP, on this ground alone.
I don't recollect this problem from earlier versions of Word. Why it has crept in now bewilders - and can exasperate - me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor attempt
I am a computer nerd, and I find this technology very late 90s. It should have been released 5-10 years ago, not recently.

5.0 out of 5 stars Word 2002
This program is excellent if you like to use voice recognition software. You can also write onscreen and Word should recognise that letter. Read more
