GRAVEYARD SHIFT

(Canada - 1986)

DVD aspect ratio: 1.33:1
Theatrical aspect ratio: 1.85:1
Theatrical soundtrack: Mono

Gerard Ciccoritti's impressive shocker - a Canadian vampire thriller which seemed to herald a major new talent on the horror movie scene - has arrived on DVD (courtesy of Film 2000) in less-than-optimum condition. The full-screen print is blurred and grainy, and the 2.0 mono soundtrack is not only tinny and muffled, but hideously out-of-sync in places, especially during the last 30 minutes. Worse still, instead of sending an uncut print to the BBFC for this DVD release, Film 2000 simply re-submitted the same censored version (35 seconds cut from the film release, 16 seconds from the video release) originally passed with an 18 certificate for VHS! An uncut disc is currently available in America under the title CENTRAL PARK DRIVER (?!), but the sound and picture quality is reportedly no better. Only a full digital restoration would do justice to this stylish, hyper-violent, low-budget shocker.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bought in error, 30 Jun 2009
I confess to buying this in error at a car boot thinking it was Stephen King's Graveyard Shift, fortunately I only paid £1 for it because it's very poorly acted and nothing to do with King. What it Graveyard Shift really is is an almost erotic vampire movie with almost no story to it. So warning, do not buy thinking it's a Stephen King Adaption.

1.0 out of 5 stars One Star for Movie, One Star for DVD, 15 Sep 2004
By Andrew Heenan "Andrew" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Vampire senses when people are dying, suicidal ... their 'time has come'; interesting idea, raising questions of how good or evil he is; he falls in love with a woman who has terminal cancer; great possibilities there, too. But this film doesn't explain or resolve any of this, it simply chucks up more and more distractions and then kinda fades out.

It starts strongly, with great mood and atmosphere, marred only by grating sound effects (utterly irrelevant, and they pop up all the way though). The camera work is great, with stunning lighting.

Then they literally lose the plot. The screenplay is so bad that more than once, when an actor has spoken a line, the person he (or she) is talking to just gazes in disbelief, then trots out an equally obscure line of their own. There's a fair bit of gore, if you like that kind of thing, but what the director thinks is erotic, is mostly so cold it just doesn't work. And if you can watch a vampire making love in a red-lined coffin without laughing, you are stronger than me!

A wasted film; should be remade by professionals.
