Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Sculpted for the right handed among us, the Logitech Cordless MouseMan Optical will soon become a shimmering blue orb on your desktop that represents a sense of freedom and productivity. The big cheeses among mice at the moment are cordless optical devices such as this, which offers the sensitivity and accuracy of optical technology plus the freedom of a wire-free connection.

The Logitech Cordless MouseMan Optical with its blue and silver two-tone finish is sculpted to fit your hand and comes with comfortable rubber pads on either side for smooth and comfortable movement. The mouse sports the usual array of buttons on the top, two buttons and a wheel, while adding a small thumb button on the left-hand side placed considerately, so that it's easily accessible when required without constantly being pressed accidentally.

The cordless aspect works via radio technology and operates anywhere within two metres of your computer. It isn't based on infrared and therefore works on the most cluttered desk--even from behind the PC.

Freedom can have its drawbacks, however, and the Logitech Cordless MouseMan Optical's problem, although minor, is that it runs on batteries rather than drawing power from the PC. Over time this will of course add to the running cost of the device, however, the average battery life is months rather than weeks. In an attempt to combat any problems this might incur, Logitech have built in a warning device into the software and like a car's fuel light gives you plenty of time to refill the tank. This slight niggle is a small price to pay when considering the freedom this product gives you.--Jason Denwood

Manufacturer's Description
The revolutionary Cordless MouseMan Optical combines advanced cordless and optical technologies. There's no cord to limit your movement and you can use it on any surface. Logitech's patented digital radio technology works in a two-meter (six-foot) range, without being pointed at the computer. Thanks to the optical sensor, you no longer need a mouse pad and there are no moving parts to break down or clog up. The sleek, contoured shape provides maximum comfort and control. Works on PC and Macintosh. From the inventors of cordless mice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost Life Changing, 29 Sep 2001
By Alex Allan (Cambridge, UK) - See all my reviews
For the last 5 years I have been happy with Logitech's Mouse Man 96 - a well made ergonomic mouse which has really lasted. I then decided to go cordless for more freedom and a tidier desk! I also wanted to try optical technology because it can be used on (just about) any surface and has a better response. When I received this mouse I was not disappointed. Logitech have kept up their standards - a well-made mouse, feels good, looks good.

The mouse is great for general use (such as surfing the web or for word processing, etc...). I was also very impressed with its performance in games; Half-Life works really well with it. However, technically the mouse has a (slow) refresh rate of 50Hz which is not as fast as some of the corded optical mice which does annoy some hard-core gamers - but I have not noticed any difference.

Although this mouse is really great I have noticed that the mouse's response is a little dodgy if you do not follow the instructions about the receiver. You need to place the receiver 20cm away from anything which gives out radio frequency radiation (including monitors and speakers as well as the PC itself). The battery rating is also a bit of an exaggeration - your mileage will vary depending on what surface you run the mouse on. Darker surfaces use more battery power than lighter coloured surfaces. However, you can run this mouse on rechargeable batteries contrary to some reports. I run mine on Uniross Ni-MH batteries that I got for about a fiver and I find that I have to re-charge about once every 2 and a half weeks - but it's well worth the hassle.

After the first 1 and a bit months that I've had this mouse I have to say that I would never go back to mechanical or corded.

5.0 out of 5 stars Had it for a while, and very impressed., 11 Oct 2001
By Dewi Morgan (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I swore I would never buy another moouse until one came out that was both optical and cordless. Well, it happened, so I bought it, and £50 poorer off, I wandered happily home.
I've since had exactly zero problems with it. It installs well, comes with great additional software, and caused no clashes with any of the other pointing devices I have installed (graphics tablet, trackpad, keyboard nipple, regular mouse). All worked happily together. No noticeable impact on my (rather slow) system, and seemed fine for games playing, though I suspect real hardcore gamers will stick to cabled mice for a while yet.

The battery life is staggering. I've been using it on most sensible surfaces, including fairly dark ones. I have yet to find one it will NOT work on, though I suspect that both glass and completely black surfaces will reflect too little light to be detected (well, DUH!). It's on constantly (no switch on it), and shows no signs yet of failing.

Gripes? Well, since I use it with a laptop, it would be nice if it was smaller. I suspect it's too big to be used by kids, but then, who's going to spend fifty quid on a kid's mouse anyway?

It would also be nice if it was more ambidextrously shaped. I'm left-handed, and while I'm used to using a mouse right-handed, it is nice to swap around sometimes. Having no cable should make this easier, but the shape is just WRONG: it is NOT usable lefthanded (unless you have very funnyshaped hands).

Ability to recharge would have been nice, but given the battery life, I don't think it's necessary.

So in summary: best thing since sliced bread, unless your desk is black or glassy, you are completely lefthanded, or you are a child.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST MOUSE, 31 Oct 2001
By A Customer
I was after a new mouse to replace my standard mouse that came shipped with my PC. Dont be put of by the high asking price for this nouse. You cant beat the quality of this Mouse. No cord means a lot less hassle!! I always had a problem with my cord being to short or either going all over my keyboard, now I will never have that problem again. Being Optical is amazing. This mouse has supperb precise accuracy. Its fast and very precise. The batterys last AGES, I have had my mouse for over a month and the batterys still register as Full. You will be surprised by the amount of space saved by this mouse. No mat is needed because it has no Ball, Simple. I always had to shuffle my keyboard and mouse around because there was never enough space, now i dont have that problem because I don't need a mouse mat. THIS IS A MUST HAVE COMPUTER MOUSE, microsofts optical versions dont even touch the standads of this mouse. BUY IT, you wont regret it!!!!!!!
