Amazon.co.uk Review

Tsui Hark's triumphant return to making a film set in the present day, Time and Tide, is so fast-moving and kinetically stylised that at times the plot's coherence has to be taken on trust. Young barman Tyler (Nicholas Tse) gets a lesbian cop pregnant after a drunken one-night stand when she fell out with her lover. He feels an obligation to raise money to help her and takes a job in the third-rate bodyguard company of Uncle Li (Anthony Wong), showing a real flair for the job, but not for Li's over-organised system. Coincidentally, he befriends Jack (Wu Bai), husband of the daughter of Li's main client, but also a retired mercenary, whose former allies are in town and up to no good. The two friends find themselves intermittently co-operating and opposed as they pursue their separate agendas; the violence, the bodycount and the special effects all escalate continually. Highlights include some spectacular scenes of grappling down skyscrapers and Tyler's delivering the baby of his friend's wife while she shoots one of her husband's enemies over his shoulder--Tsui Hark's take on the post-John Woo thriller is entertainingly exaggerated and semi-parodic.

On the DVD: The DVD has a choice of English, German and Cantonese dubbing and subtitles in 18 languages from Hindi to Icelandic, and comes with filmographies and theatrical trailers. The soundtrack, full of loud music and explosions, is presented in an abrasively loud Dolby Sound. The film is presented in widescreen letterbox in the film's original 2.35:1 aspect ratio; the digital format brings out its deliberately garish colours and use of shadows. --Roz Kaveney

5.0 out of 5 stars The Joel Silver of Asia is back to his best!, 17 May 2003
After a failed attempt at trying to establish himself in America with average films like 'Double Team' & 'Knock Off', leagendary Hong Kong producer/director Tsui Hark returned to Chinese cinema in 2000 with style to make the excellent 'Time and Tide'.

The plot starts off when a bartender named Tyler, played by Chinese popstar Nicholas Tse, has a drunken one night stand with a lesbian cop (?!) and gets her pregnant. Feeling guilty, Tyler decides to get a job in a Bodyguard firm run by Uncle Li (Anthony Wong) to help support the baby. One day the firm gets an job to protect a rich Businessman who.... and the plot from then on goes completely off the rails. But you won't really care, as this is one film where the action is more important than the plot itself.

Time and Tide is so action packed and fast moving, you'll be guaranteed not to be bored for a single minute with the last half of the film having some of the best violence I've seen since John Woo's infamous 'Hard Boiled'. The action set pieces are all choreographed and filmed to perfection, using some clever visual effects. The 'grappling down a skyscraper' scene has to be seen to be belived!

Tsui Hark, director of Hong Kong classics like 'Once uopn a Time in China 1,2&3', 'The Blade' and producer on 'The killer' and 'A Better Tomorrow' (both directed by John Woo) shows that he hasn't lost his magic touch when it comes to excitement and originality.

The film isn't for everyone, but for fans of Hong Kong cinema or action fans in general should check it out, highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing Action, 1 Feb 2005
Having only seen the last 20 mins of this film without knowing the name, it took me a month to track it down! I wanted to understand the story and curious if the last 20 mins action were as good as the the rest of the film. They were. Admittedly, I had to see it twice fully to get the plot, maybe due to the translation?

The Story: A sloppy inexperience young Body guard teams up with an Assassin to to get rid of a South American Gang in Hong Kong which the Assassin was previously a member. The ACTIONS are fast, short, technical and plenty. No CGI magic either.

3.0 out of 5 stars Time to learn Japanese, 28 Feb 2004
I found 'Time and Tide' to be very different from many other Japanese action films in that it had a complicated plot which had some substance to it. However, while on the surface this may seem a good thing I found it to be confusing at times. I am writing this review as someone who does not speak Japanese and so have adjusted my rating accordingly. I thought the acting, music and camera work were all very well done but I found the film very difficult to watch for the simple reason that I speak English. The plot was difficult to follow using subtitles and I am sure that some of the dialogue lost its power in translation. Aside from this I cannot fault the film to a great degree, the director having done a very good job.

I will attempt to summarise the complicated plot in a few sentences. The story follows the actions of a retired mercenary (Wu Bai) and a bodyguard (Nicholas Tse), who incidentally has knocked up a lesbian cop, as they form an uneasy alliance to against some old friends of said mercenary who are in town. The plot then gets quite complicated and, using subtitles, becomes very hard to follow. The film in itself is without a doubt an excellent achievement with some absolutely superb action sequences and I'm sure I would have enjoyed it a great deal had both the translation and subtitles not detracted from the entertainment.

I would love to give this film 4 but can, unfortunately, only award 3 stars due solely to my language. I would strongly recommend this film to anyone who speaks Japanese but, unless you are willing to watch the film several times in order to understand the plot, I would not advise the purchase of the DVD to anyone who would need to make use of subtitles.
