Amazon.co.uk Review

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 on the Game Boy Advance doesn't look or play quite like its other incarnations but the amount of death--or serious injury--defying tricks you can pull off, and the wild level design, graphics and responsive controls all work amazingly well for the handheld. With an overhead isometric view and its use of only four buttons, Hawk veterans will need to readjust their attack. Still, you'll be amazed at how many tricks have been crammed into this cartridge.

For the most part the visuals are clear and detailed with the skaters being incredibly well animated. Gameplay hasn't changed much from before; initially there are six levels available (more are unlocked as a reward) and after picking a skater, you must perform tricks and locate items to earn loot for buying new gear, which will enable you to improve your skater's stats and continue to the next skate park. The game is sadly without some of the cooler features of the big consoles--for example you can't create parks or skaters and multi-play is sorely missed.

Nevertheless, the feeling of accomplishment one gets when perfectly landing a stunt is just as satisfying on the GBA as it is on the PS One and Dreamcast versions. Even folks who don't like skateboarding games will think Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 is a great (and addictive) achievement for the handheld platform. --Mark Brooks, Amazon.com

Product Description

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, which has been a bona fide hit on every console it has graced, has staked its claim on the Game Boy Advance. The idea is still to perform hundreds of complicated tricks for points, and players can still ride as T Hawk or any of a dozen pros in the game. Players can create their own skaters from scratch too, by selecting appearance, gear, clothes and more. Heck, you can even create your own ideal skate park by building ramps, rails, pipes and other challenging obstacles.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gaming gem, 17 Dec 2001
By A Customer
A gaming gem!

Easily one of my favourite games for the Game Boy Advance. This game has excellent game play that's easy to use.
One of the things that makes the GBA version of Tony Hawk's different from other consoles is the view. Gone is the behind the skater view which is replaced by an isometric view, like footy games. If you already have another Tony Hawk's game it can get some getting used to but it shouldn't create too many problems.
The graphics are the department where this game really shines. They are nothing short of breathtaking. The areas look very realistic. When a skater does a trick you can see their board turning and their legs moving-not just a jumble of colour.
One of the only things wrong is the lack of levels (only 6 plus 1 hidden one) but the list of modes makes up or this problem.
Competing this without cheats takes a while but finding all the gaps is practically impossible.

4.0 out of 5 stars nice game, 29 Sep 2001
By A Customer
tony hawks is now a household name, with at least one incarnation per system of this title, it seems to have monopolized the extreme sports videogame industry. and why shouldn't it? i mean, the games have a reputation for great graphics, gameplay physics, replayablilty, and overall fun. the gb advance, upon release, showcased some cool titles like f-zero and mario advance, yet one title stood out - tony hawks pro skater 2. games by the same name have graced numerous systems, much like the predecessing title of a similar name: tony hawks skateboarding. the advance rendition has flipped the gameplay into isometric view to fit the advances capabilities, and this style works remarkably well. graphically, this game truly delivers. exploding on-screen text tells you which trick(s) you're currently performing, and various other fx are also used, like a zooming camera, and particle effects such as sparks from a grindpole. this is definitely a groundbreaking title. the levels stop at skatestreet ventura (i.e. two normal levels are missing) however, the levels in the game are accurate representations of their 3d counterparts, with only a few changes made. e.g. the first hanger level is just as much fun to play on - even the secret wind tunnel makes a return, although it has been repositioned. i thought the game was going to seem like skating around a 2d postcard of a level, but the levels look stunning. the actual skaters are composited of a low number of polygons, and seeing such 3d'ness in a handheld game makes my eyes water with delight.
the sounds are also exellent, with jammin' tunes riffing in the background, and every scape and bump of the board being conveyed substanitially. even the high pitched note when you do a special trick is back to make the hairs on the back of your neck prick up in delight.
the gameplay rocks, with only minor quirks, such as not being able to tell whether a certain obstacle is in your reach or not due to the view, but on the most part its alotta fun. b is the acceleration/ollie button, a is for grinding, L is for kick tricks and R for grab tricks. this configeration is a challenge to accustom to at first, but becomes more or less second nature after a few runs.
the main flaws with the title is the absence of any multiplayer mode, although this may be asking too much. also, i think that the guys at nintendo who decided to equip the gba with an un-backlit screen had a screw lose, cos this means that dimmer levels in thps2 are hard to distinguish even in moderately regular situations. i recommend playing this title with the screen under a bright light source or face a dim contrast.

otherwise, this is a cool re-make of the best skating videogame franchise ever!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars surprisingly good, 2 Oct 2001
By A Customer
My initial reservation about this game was how THPS2 plays in the isometric viewpoint. Back in the spectrum days i could never get the hang of the isometric view point in games like hydrofool, alien 8 and head over heels, so i thought that this would similaly confuse me. I also have played the PS version quite alot, so it was with some trepidation that I parted with my cash. Having done so i'm glad to say that i am pleasently surprised.
The control over your skater is initially trick but quite adaptable, and the forward , stop, rotate nature of the control suits the isometric viewpoint well. However sometimes in the heat of a grind to wallride to wallie to grind the direction sometimes is tricky.
On the whole the pick up, do a few ojectives, score a few high scores, switch off, works well with the GBA format.
