Amazon.co.uk Review

It's slightly alarming that Ron Sexsmith opens Blue Boy, his fourth album, with a song about writing a song, which is usually a sure sign of a songwriter about to disappear into his own navel. The next stage is an entire album of songs about the seedy tedium of life on the road. Fortunately, the estimable Steve Earle is in the production chair, so Sexsmith quickly gets back to reality with cuts like the slice-of-life "Cheap Hotel", the jangly mid-paced "Don't Ask Why" and the finger-picking delight "Tell Me Again" with its faintly Cajun feel. The smoky jazz-tinged "Foolproof" is one of this Canadian tune-wrangler's finest achievements to date, displaying his talent for extended melodic lines and revealing an unlikely vocal timbre that recalls Hoagy Carmichael. With its admirably live ambience, Blue Boy goes some way towards restoring the qualities that made Sexsmith's 1995 debut album so promising, and also lets him kick out a little on a few tracks which display slightly rockier, funkier and more soulful aspects of his talent. What Sexsmith has yet to find though, is a producer who will keep him doing takes until he sings in tune all of the time, not just 90 per cent of it. --Johnny Black

CD Description

While its an indictment of the shameful state of the music industry that a highly respected songwriter like Ron Sexsmith is unable to maintain a career on a major label, its a testament to Sexsmith's artistic vision that his eventuation into the indie world doesn't alter his creativity a whit. If anything, BLUE BOY is a marked progression for Sexsmith. Though it's produced by Steve Earle and Ray Kennedy, there's no evidence of Sexsmith "going country" here. Earle and Kennedyare perfectly attuned to Sexsmith's post-Beatles pop classicism. They merely highlight in a fresh, interesting way, as on the infectious opener "This Song", where Sexsmith's reedyvoice is brilliantly offset by a soul-powered horn section.Or "Not Too Big", which adds a funky touch to the proceedings. Longtime fans needn't fear; their heroes fragile, transcendently melodic gift remains completely intact here, he's just picked up a couple of new steps along his journey.

4.0 out of 5 stars Superb album, but overshadowed by previous releases., 2 Jul 2001
By Koolboy "Kool Aid UK" (suffolk, England) - See all my reviews
A long wait for Blue Boy to arrive, but it was worth the wait. Ron loses none of his magical touch as he lays his melancholy voice onto the "small town going nowhere" melodies, and as usual carrying a haunting 'musical box' style hook. With Don Kerr on backing vocals Ron maintains the sound we all know and love, but with a change of producer (Steve Earle) some new flavors are added to the pot. Some work well, but I still find after 10 listens, the reggae beat of 'Never been done' not quite fitting in with the rest of the album. Top marks go to 'Fallen' Ronboy lyrics at their best.'Foolproof' with it's beautiful jazz club sound. 'Tell me Again' which is vintage Ron, remeniscent of the first album. And the winner is.....'Miracle in Itself' showing Ron is the new Paul McCartney including piano. While this may be a great album, I have to put it in 4th place when compared with his 3 previous albums. For all who have yet to buy an album from Ron, I recommend buying them in order of release, and listen at least 6 times before deciding if it's good. Ron's magic comes from his ability to sing around the notes, drifting in and out of tune at times, to create emotion, and for me his trademark 5/8 timing which again drifts in and out at his whim, makes it a few weeks before you can sing along. A modern master.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprised and delighted by a "new" discovery, 2 Jan 2002

Just borrowed Sexsmith's Blue Boy and what a delightful surprise. Some wonderful original songs - including the brilliant "Foolproof" - and mellow understated playing. Sexsmith's voice is uncannily like Paul McCartney at times and his delivery is great. Good lyrics, witty and humorous, thoughtful but not too self obsessed. The tracks are well arranged whether guitar or piano/organ driven, with some nice sax/trumpet support. Not a bad track. The kind of CD you can play over and over again. Give me more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Album of the year, 1 Oct 2001
By ben120n@aol.com (nottingham) - See all my reviews
What a wonderful record!
From track 1, cleverly jumping two bars vocally while the band stays in 4/4, to the lament of as on earth will it be done in hell, through foolproof and single sons, this album has to be the best both vocally, lyrically and melodically of 2001. Imagine Squeeze & Tom Waits got together with a young singer who could do it, and you're halfway there.
