Amazon.co.uk Review

Redhat Linux 7.1 Deluxe Edition is aimed at work-station users but includes server software and an automated server (as well as a laptop) installation routine. Important upgrades include the 2.4 kernel, Gnome 1.2, KDE 2.1.1, XFree86 4, support for "hot-pluggable" USB devices, automatic firewall setup with ipchains and better support for recordable CD-ROM devices. It also does an excellent job of hardware detection.

The slick Anaconda installation routine automatically installs Linux if it's all you want on the PC. You need to interact to install Linux as a second OS on a Windows PC but this, too, is easy.

Gnome remains the default desktop but KDE can now be made the default, though install both and you can choose between Gnome and KDE at boot time. It's by far the best KDE setup Redhat has given us since it adopted Gnome. Even better Gnome includes KDE menus and vice versa.

As usual, more software is installed than you need and some items you will need--such as StarOffice 5.2--are a separate installation. Among the nine CDs are two game CDs--demos from Loki and over 300 other games on the Binge! (sic) CD.

The Power Tools CD contains various utilities--none of which you need (or they'd be installed already). The Applications disc contains a variety of commercial apps and demos including Yahoo! Messenger and Acrobat Reader. The documentation is good, but for a user who also has to maintain the system rather than just use it, we'd recommend Running Linux to go with it.

There are niggles. Unlike Suse 7.1 it failed to set up icons for our CD-ROM drives in Gnome or KDE despite claiming to do so. It's dispiriting for a new Linux user to have to figure out how to do something as basic as read a CD--it does Linux no favours. Otherwise it's excellent. --Steve Patient

5.0 out of 5 stars Linux now ready for the desktop, 17 Oct 2001

Having long used linux for servers and firewalls I had always avoided on the desk top as windows had still had a slight edge on hardware recognition and installation simplicity. But wih Red Hat 7.1 the balance changes. Trying this installation across three hardware platforms quickly showed that it now did a better job of identifying and using the hardware than windows did. Is it perfect? No. But then again what is? But if you want the stability of Linux and the desktop usability of windows without the bloated software and licensing that MS would insist on then this is certainly one of the better options.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Red Hat yet!!, 20 May 2001

I have used Red Hat Linux since version 6.0 and I must say that Red Hat 7.1 is the best yet, and especially better than the rather buggy 7.0 release. I have used this release solidly since it came out and I find it so great to use, especially where it installs a firewall during the initial installation. That way you know your protected in some way from people trying to hack or DoS you straight away. Red Hat are my choice of Linux distrobution every time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Leaving Windows behind..., 14 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Last night I installed Red Hat Linux 7.1 with only a couple of hours experince of RH6.2. I expected it to be an uphill struggle installing my network card, internet sharing and other hardware support.

It wasnt. After making up a couple of ip addresses and specifying the ip of our gateway I was away. The internet sharing and pretty much all of the hardware on my notebook (which is 10 months old now) was detected and installed automatically.

Linux is no longer just a tool for us developers... leave Windows behind and get an operating system where (1) much of the software is open source and hence FREE and (2) really doesnt crash very often.

Not a bad Linux distro, but there are many out there better. It's easy to install, but the actual layout and method that Red Hat have put down isn't the best. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Hats off to Red Hat!
I agree with 7.0 being buggy and the firewall setup is very good, and needed! Buy this if you have previous versions of Red Hat, it's a good improvement!
