Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Stand-up comedian, actress and singer Lea DeLaria is an all-round performer. On Play It Cool she presents a less confrontational image than on 1994's Bulldyke in A China Shop, adopting the role of seductive, witty, confident and heterosexual jazz chanteuse to perfection. Her voice ranges from little girl lost innocence to harder edged tones, both suited to the opening "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd". With stylings from Billie Holiday to Judy Garland, "I've Got You're Number" heads straight for the heart of 1950s big-band balladry, improvised scat vocals proving DeLaria can swing with the best. "Cool" is anything but, the accompaniment understated, that voice dripping with the promise of sex. In "With Every Breath I Take" we get to imagine every late night smoky bar in every old Hollywood film we've ever seen and while pastiche, the characterisation is startlingly evocative. DeLaria sums it up with "All That Jazz", confidently suggesting, following her recent twin roles in the lavishly acclaimed 2000 Broadway revival of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, that this girl just wants to have fun playing bad. When she sings "Life Has Been Good To Me" she has such an upbeat twinkle you suspect she means every word. --Gary S Dalkin

5.0 out of 5 stars A smouldering performance, 3 Jun 2002

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Having seen Lea DeLaria as a comedian (I was lucky enough not to arrive late, or sit in proximity to the front!) I gave this CD a listen more out of curiosity, having caught site of her singing on late night TV and finding myself oddly impressed. I can see why 'Play It Cool' has had such strong reviews. Here is a voice of extraordinary dexterity and versatility - yet so measured and centred. The arrangements of these standards are undoubtedly rich and nightclub evocative; but they are not at all obtrusive. Indeed often they complement the intensity of DeLaria's voice perfectly. Of course not everything is as it seems, and nor is it intended to be: there is more than a little tongue-in-cheek alongside the smoke and the swing. But that's how jazz song is meant to be. 'Cool' is the standout (or should I say stand-up?) number for me. But it is thankfully difficult to choose. In summary: Lea DeLaria is an extraordinary talent. She even refreshed these classics for someone more drenched in the avant and instrumental ends of jazz. But then I should have remembered: the songbook always speaks anew, and here it has found another compelling voice.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great voice, shame about the sound engineer, 13 Sep 2001
By A Customer
This recording is horribly overproduced. Delaria's undoubtedly lovely voice is clearly put through god knows what kind of processer to turn these numbers into unexciting wallpaper music. The stand-up comic's timing is evident in the delivery. Sometimes it works, but mainly it just sounds arch and mannered. I looked forward to hearing this disc, but I found nothing here for me. Not one to share with Sue Lawley.
