Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
One of finest jazz albums of the early 1950s, Collector's Items was made under the nominal leadership of Miles Davis, though the real star of this welcome CD reissue is the then-decidedly inexperienced Sonny Rollins. For all the many pleasures offered by Davis's sparkling trumpet, the lithely sonorous lines of pianists Walter Bishop Jr and Tommy Flanagan, and the great Philly Joe Jones on drums, Rollins's work is the most consistently trenchant. Not only that, on the four 1953 cuts he manages to outplay Charlie Parker, also on tenor for this occasion and billed on the sleeve as "Charlie Chan" for contractual reasons. And while it is true that Parker never felt truly at home with the alto's larger brother, that doesn't dilute the imperious glory of Rollins' work here. Moreover, he is just as much the star of the accompanying session (three numbers) cut over three years later in March 1956, by which time Parker was dead. Highlights abound throughout, and not just when Rollins is in charge. In the unlikely event of needing to sample, go for the 1953 "The Serpent's Tooth " (two cuts) or the beautiful 1956 reading of "In Your Own Sweet Way", arguably Dave Brubeck's finest composition. The original Esquire LP now costs a small fortune even if you can find a copy, and the doubly good news is that this new incarnation on CD is not only a lot cheaper but also boasts 20-bit remastering--which on this occasion really does makes a difference (not always the case, techno-anoraks' claims notwithstanding). They don't make records--or indeed jazz musicians--like this any more. --Richard Palmer
