The first 14 tracks on this disk are piano rolls recorded by Debussy in 1913. These are reproducing rolls - that is, the dynamics of the playing are recorded as well as the notes and timing, as they would be by a velocity-sensitive MIDI keyboard today. Most of the cheaper rolls such as the ones of Jelly Roll Morton do not record the dynamics. The rolls have been played back on a Welte piano and recorded in stereo. There is still a slight distortion of the playing, giving a marginal lack of flow and phrasing. This is much less than the distortion of the actual sound that would mar a disk recording from the same year. So if listened to with a little tolerance, there is a good impression of Debussy's actual playing. The last four tracks are acoustic disk recordings of songs with Debussy accompanying on the piano. There is an excellent booklet, and the whole disk is both fascinating and a pleasure to hear. Not a 21st century digital recording, but as near as we can get to Debussy's playing.
