This double CD offers the five concerts plus two violin sonatas thrown in for good measure.
To me, Mozart's five violin concerts are among his finest achievements. He is, of course, better known for his works for piano. But then there is a lot of mediocre stuff to be found in the cycle of 27 piano concerts, too. Not so in his cycle of violin concerts.

This recording is part of Philips Classics' carefully selected "50 Great Recordings" collection, and rightfully so. Recorded in the early 1960s by Arthur Grumiaux with Sir Colin Davis directing the London Symphony Orchestra, the recordings have been restored using 96kHz 24-Bit mapping. The sound quality is excellent indeed, even though the age does show in direct comparison to newer recordings.

I used to have the cycle played by Perlman, and loved it. It was a newer recording and the sound quality was somewhat better (I can't seem to find that recording on this site). I listened to it so much, I eventually felt the need to get another reading of these works. I bought this and it eventually replaced the Perlman.
Both violinists are excellent, of course. With Perlman, you'd be more likely to think "virtuosity". Grumiaux, on the other hand, seems to completely vanish behind the music. He doesn't make you think of the interpreter at all, there is only the music. To me, this was always Grumiaux's hallmark trait. That and a warm, graceful tone. His approach to Mozart is serene, which is the key to Mozart, I believe. No dramatizing, no over the top youthfulness, but a graceful and yet weighty, serene and yet lively approach. A human approach.


I eventually gave the Perlman away. (To a friend, though, so I can still play it eventually...) Grumiaux stayed.
