Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Opening with the spirit of Satie in brief introductory fashion, Chris Clark states his tonal intentions for new home Warp, by debuting a showcase of electronica with attitude and purpose on Clarence Park. Avoiding the extremes of hyperpitched, non-sensical beat displacement, while sidestepping the bland atmospherics of some so called "experimental" artists, Clark finds a middle ground that tests without aural assault or insult. Not so much an album of instant individual tracks, more the archetypal "journey", Clarence Park constructs itself from tricks of technology, as beats are stopped, started, stretched phased and distorted, melding between snatches of ambiance and more conventional forms of melody. A timely release from Warp, that harks back to a sound many people associate with the label, echoes of James & Paradinas omnipresent; its content veering more to impressive naiïvity rather than arrogant nonchalance. An astute debut of controlled chaos, clicks, whirrs, and gnarls that fits as new blood perfectly amidst Warp's more established artist roster of Tenor, Snapper, Tortoise & co. --Found Sounds

5.0 out of 5 stars Nu-skool old-skool electro wonderment, 22 May 2001
By Jonman (Seattle, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Clarence Park (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful release from Warp. It's got shades of all the great Warp artists, hints of Squarepusher and Aphex Twin, at times reminiscent of Autechre on speed after a hard day at the office. It reminds you of everything that made electro so good a few years ago, but brings it bang up to date. I lost count of how many times it made me smile the first time I listened to it.

Miss it at your peril.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but not Chris Clark's finest, 22 Oct 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Clarence Park (Audio CD)
This is an interesting debut album, with an often less overtly electronic approach to, well, electronica than some of its contemporaries. Chris thoughtfully packs his sounds with detail resulting in enormous crushing soundscapes as well as uniquely throaty, punchy percussion. Many of the more rhythmic tracks, however, lack development and the album is marred by the horendous Lord Of The Dance (this track should be followed by the sound of tumbleweed). Some of the shorter piano/keyboard pieces are a bit too basic (yet are hardly minimalist) and rely on the novetly of the 'lo-fi' processing (BoC do it better). Overall worth a listen, but not really a patch on Chris Clark's second album Empty The Bones Of You, which shouldn't be seen as a terrible insult since that is, in my opinion, one of the finest pieces of synthetic music ever recorded (if you only buy one, buy that).

5.0 out of 5 stars Warp's Finest, 17 Aug 2004
By ROBERT SCOTT (DINGWALL, ROSS-SHIRE Scotland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Clarence Park (Audio CD)
Anyone familiar with Warp Records will know roughly what to expect from this, Chris Clark's debut album, although listeners who find the likes of Squarepusher or Aphex Twin too confused sounding with two much weirdness and not enough melody will much prefer this album. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty technological weirdness on this album but it doesn't allow itself to get as bizarre sounding as other Warp offerings.
In short, if electronica's your thing, but Warp records stuff is too scary for you, this album should still satisfy, it's got everything from banging dance floor numbers to wild, powerful electro. You'll love it.
