Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The music on Mark-Anthony Turnage's eponymous album derives its power from his ability to successfully marry diverse musical styles. Jazz and blues, for example, merge with more overtly avant-garde elements to provide a highly individual and always fascinating experience: Turnage's take on tango in "Some Days" (1989) provides this set's first example. Cynthia Clarey is a clear, determined soloist, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as committed an accompanist as one could wish. Night Dances provides further evidence of Turnage's lyrical side. The Samuel Beckett-inspired "Your Rockaby" (1994) is a hugely exciting showpiece for saxophone and orchestra, its driving rhythms propelling the music to a frenzy. Perhaps the highlight of the first disc is "Dispelling the Fears", a double concerto that in this recording features the talents of two of the finest trumpeters alive today, namely Håkan Hardenberger and John Wallace. The second disc includes "Blood on the Floor", a piece which shows Turnage at his most freely inspired. The various musical elements of his musical personality freely interact here. The Elegy (the still centre around which the piece turns) is a touching tribute to the composer's brother. This is stimulating and powerful music that commands attention. --Colin Clarke
