Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Diamond Multimedia's Rio line of MP3 players has always been top-notch--and the latest iteration, the Rio 600SE, proves no exception. The nifty-looking Rio 600SE also offers detachable faceplates, allowing users to customise its appearance (although they are a bit pricey). But it is not just the aesthetics of the Rio that are so appealing (although the über-trendy, over-the-ear headphones make another nice touch). What really makes the Rio unique is just how simple it is to use. From installation to manipulation of the player interface or the RioPort Audio Manager software, it's as easy as MP1-2-3. Intuitive on all counts, the Rio will rarely force the user to consult the manual--whether in the middle of set-up, switching songs on the road, or transferring MP3s.

In addition to the nearly ubiquitous MP3 format, the Rio 600 also handles the new Windows Media Audio (WMA) format, and Diamond says it will be software upgradable to upcoming formats. The player ships with 64 MB of flash memory. While this can handle over two hours of WMA-formatted material, it holds only around one hour of MP3 playback (at 128 kbps). To compensate, the Rio 600SE will be upgradable to potentially 372 MB of total memory and Diamond offers a unique upgrade approach. They will sell the memory enhancements as new backs to the player, providing different types of memory that users can choose from and, as Diamond puts it, "future-proofing" the player against diverse upcoming memory types.

The USB-only interface proves to be another double-edged sword. On the one side, you'll need a USB port and to be running Windows 98 or Windows 2000 or later to hook up the Rio to your PC. (For the Mac, you'll need a USB port and Mac OS 8.6 or higher.) On the other, the transfer rate is like a hare compared to older tortoise players using parallel ports. It takes only around 10 seconds to move a four-minute MP3 song from PC to the Rio.

The Rio 600SE is not a perfect player--it lacks a belt clip and its unique format memory upgrades have been slow to appear--but the Rio 600 is built to last and produces great quality digital audio. --J Curtis

Product Description

With even more memory (64 MB), the Rio 600 will give you even more music plus customisable features and high-end audio which you can't get from other players. Capture and playback up to two hours of digital-quality music from the Internet or your CDs. Seize your audio, master your mix, retool your memory, even select your faceplate colour--it gives complete freedom of choice.

The Rio 600 supports the most popular audio formats--MP3 and WMA--and can be upgraded to support emerging digital standards so your Rio is always up to date. SDMI compliance means you can download secure tracks from all the major recording labels. Also, upgrade your Rio 600 with separate snap-on memory backpacks--up to 340 MB for up to nine hours of music playback. The USB interface allows you to download songs from your PC or Mac to your Rio faster than with any other interface type.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent player!, 16 Feb 2002
By A Customer
I upgraded my old Rio PMP300 to the 64MB Rio600 3 months ago. It has nice curved styling and clip on covers if you get tired of the default black.

All important sound quality is excellent!

The original PMP300 was good, but this is an even better player, fully supported by Windows XP and Media Player. Good bass definition and nice features like playlist setup and track delete all on the player itself. The USB interface is very fast - a typical track takes 5 seconds to download (about 10-15 if you convert from MP3 to WMA). Good battery life - even with the LCD screen - which has a nice blue backlight and displays track name and all the running time info.

Downsides: The battery compartment cover is a bit fiddly and flimsy.
The cool wrap-over-ear headphones supplied with it broke last week.
It's quite hard to see through the oval shaped window over the LCD screen.

5.0 out of 5 stars I am an everyday normal teenager - trust this review!, 29 Jul 2001
By Mr G Bain (Liverpool, UK.) - See all my reviews
I opened the box and realised how much of a compact digital audio player it is. It is a great size making you be able to use it for the gym and any exercise. With the small carry case you get with it, it clips on easily, just like the headphones you get with it.

THe player is not a giant big brick that need cementing into a wall, it is about the size of the Nokia 8210 (its steady shape is great).

64mb get up to 2 hours of near cd quality music, just enough for me. The hard part i found with it was getting the software to work properly. Once you have installed it off the disk you need to load songs onto it, i had a problem getting the hardware to communicate with the software. This was fixed but if you're not stupid like me then you will realise that your USB connection is not the problem, the options of the software are! Before anything you need to fix your options and specify your audio player and what type of files it can hold e.g. MP3, WMA.

Trust me, if you want a good quality, reliable and handy mp3 (digital audio player) get this!

Overall i have rated this a 5-star - easy hardware, basic software, a gem of a player!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good, honest review..., 28 Mar 2002
By A Customer
I ordered the MP3 player on a Thursday in time for my AS-Level Geography field trip and it came just as I was leaving on the Monday morning, just in time. I ran back in and the setup must have only taken 15 minutes from installation to a fully, techno loaded player ready for listening.

The player is much smaller than I had thought (which is a good thing) and is perhaps the size of a standard mouse (the hardware, not the animal of course...). The headphones are kind of strange to get used to, with the over-ear clips making the earpieces rub against the outer surface of your ear slightly although this is not too noticable after a while. They are excellent, though, for activities such as off-road cycling, jogging or any other kind of activity which involves a lot of movement as they are bolted right onto your ears.

The sound quality is fairly good as long as you keep the music files at a good 128 kbps and upwards. At 96kbps there is slight quality loss on the bassier side of things. The sound tends to concentrate on the treble a bit, resulting in a slightly harsh, tinny sound on some songs where there is a great deal of high pitched instruments which can often drown out the basslines, although you can pretty much rectify this with the Bass/Treble adjustment screens.

The material case included is quite well designed, although the plastic window is slightly too low and blocks off a fraction of the screen when inside it, although the track titles and important information are still visible (this is more of an irritation than an inconvenience).

Thankfully it supports both Windows Media Audio (.wma) and MP3 (.mp3) formats and these can be mixed onto the same memory space.

One excellent feature I have noticed is the sheer economic nature of battery consumption. The guy sitting next to me with his Discman ate his way through about 8 batteries on the whole of the trip. My single battery was worn down only to 99% energy after a good few hours listening, this was the latest type of Duracell AA battery by the way.

The "Hold" feature allows you to disable functioning of the buttons so that you can stash the player in your pocket and any kind of accidental pressage of the front buttons won't skip the track, stop or pause it or adjust any settings involuntarily which is excellent when combined with the random track player so you can turn it on and forget about the player while exercising or whatever you're doing.

I think the player is a great little device and is dead simple and handy for the music lover and fitness enthusiast. A must buy if you're a first time electronic music player buyer.
