Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

This TV adaptation of the cult sci-fi novel Dune needed a wider palette of sounds than the 1984 film (scored by Toto). Composer Revell saw the material as requiring several distinct areas of scoring. Briefest of these are the minuet-style regal moments for the Emperor (such as "Navigator Advises"). There is an Asian influence for the treacherous Harkonnens, Arabic rhythms and wind instruments for the desert nomads ("Travel with Fremen"), and then holding everything together is the noble Main Theme representing the journey of Paul Atreidies from boy to Man/Messiah. It goes through many variations, ultimately becoming fused with the Arabic Fremen soundscape ("Paul Chooses--Finale"). A lot of the album's hour-plus running time is taken by sustained atmospheres of sound (eg "Pain Box"). It's divided into three parts, and it's in the final third that some earlier rapid-fire programmed percussion ("Up the Ladder/Battle") pays off with furious Arabic-laced non-stop action. In particular, the cues "Conquering the Worm", "Paul Reigns" and "Jihad Begins/Last Fight" are infectiously loud and fast. And they get faster. --Paul Tonks

4.0 out of 5 stars Sandstorm of Sound, 5 Sep 2009
By J "chasingshadows" (Liverpool, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
There seems to be a consensus among Dune fans that of the two Dune movies adapted from Frank Herbert's novels for television, the sequel to `Frank Herbert's Dune' from 2000, `Children of Dune' (2003) is the superior offering. Even the soundtrack by Brian Tyler seems to have garnered more praise and fewer criticisms. Well I'm in the opposite camp; I found the sequel to be somewhat of a disappointment after such a near-perfect & atmospheric adaptation in its predecessor. And while I don't yet own Tyler's score (after such an absorbing viewing experience with `Frank Herbert's Dune', this original soundtrack from that mini series had to be my first choice) I doubt he could better Revell's magnificent effort here.

Admittedly, many of the pieces on this soundtrack sound slightly as though they've been lost in a vacuum of space i.e. they're not quite evocative by themselves to be as interesting without a visual accompaniment. But then again this is a huge soundtrack with 27 tracks no less and at least a quarter of those are definitely what I would consider to be standout tracks, recognizable immediately as taken from those scenes they set the tone for during the mini series.

Track 1 `Main Theme' (9/10) - I find it very difficult to describe this track without using the word epic, but it has a softness to it also that works wonders at drawing the listener in, inviting you into a world of exotic sounds and haunting vocals that you won't have experienced in such inventive combinations before or since, exemplified by this album as a whole.

Track 5 `Dreamscape' (10/10) - You'll recognize this track almost instantly if you've seen the mini series. This track typifies the use of a variety of instruments to depict the foreign landscapes in the Dune saga by Revell and -wow- does he succeed! I don't know what the main wind instrument is being used on this piece (pan-pipes perhaps?) but it's totally evocative of the mini series and utterly alluring, dripping with mysticism and intrigue.

Track 9 `Travel with Fremen' (7/10) - Short, but sweet. Mixing themes of excitement and wilderness and beauty.

Track 10 `Reclaim Janis' Water/Worm Riding' (9/10) - At almost five minutes in duration this is one of the slower and more contemplative offerings on the album. But a favourite for me because unlike the majority of other tracks (that are on average less than three minutes long) this is one that allows a story to gradually unfold in the mind's eye of the listener. It's incredibly subtle with a variety of sounds interspersed with silences. The stringed instrument in particular is a great addition (a mandolin, or lute maybe). Wonderful.

Track 23 `Paul Reigns' (8/10) - Here's one that builds to a crescendo, again with an epic quality that manages to mirror perfectly the themes from the scene from which it was taken- new blood, new rule, a new dawn on Planet Arrakis is arising. A track more so than any other on which the power & skill of the City of Prague Orchestra and chorus is truly on display.

Final Track 27 `Paul Chooses- Finale' (8/10) - The only thing that's missing from this track (which would have made a welcome addition) is the narration that appeared in the movie by Saskia Reeves who played Lady Jessica, otherwise it's a beautiful final-note for the album, very grandiose & bittersweet.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well themed music, 29 May 2001
By Ciaron Drain (Edinburgh) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Right this is the sound track to the T.V Miniseries Dune not the Film version by David Lynch. The music is well themed arab sounding music for the Fremen (I always imagined the freman as Arabs), classical for Kaitain and industrial for the Harkonnen. The music is more refined than the previous one and it is to it's credit. I would however watch the Series first it certainly is a more faithful to the book than David Lynch's version.
