3.0 out of 5 stars Five so so; Six great, 22 Oct 2001
By Charles Voogd (Underwaterland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Moyzes' fifth symphony is a reworking of a symphony originally composed by his father. I've never heard that one, but when I'm honest this reworked version is a very childlike affair. It sounds more like a Sinfonietta or a 'Mountain' suite. The playing of the orchestra is bland and uninspired, the recording rather poor on focus.

The sixth symphony is an altogether far more better and concentrated work. A real symphony from the first notes to the last. Its roots are - as always by Moyzes - firmly based in Slowak and some Czech (rather Bohemian) soil. It goes to far to link Moyzes to close with the soundworld of Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler (as the booklet notes provided with this symphony series wants us to believe) but in the scherzo movement you can hear some Mahler echoes (use of the woodwind instruments) and this is also true in the beautiful crafted slow movement.
The perfomers give me a true Slowak spirit in this symphony and the way the rhythms in the finale are observed is the way I like them the most: jolly but not played as parodies of peasant dances. It bounces and rocks great.

All in all, if you are interested in the soundworld of (late) Dvorák, Suk, Novák and Suchon (they should record his symphonic works!) these works are a great joy to listen to. If you're looking for symphonic trouble, high seas, big statements and great grief, try other composers.
