5.0 out of 5 stars The sound of the golden age of Hollywood underscoring twenty years earlier, 3 Jun 2008
By Basiledes (North Wales) - See all my reviews
The middle work here 'Adventures in a Perambulator' written in 1918 and well known in the U.S. at one time is pure pleasure without the deeper concerns usually found in serious/classical (here it's really embarrassing using either term but that only leaves 'art music' which is worse) music. At the same time it is not light music either.
It is actually meant to evoke a child's wonder and easy pleasure in life and really does create an 'everyday' sort of magical atmosphere similar to Hollywood romantic comedy. It does 'sound' very much like a film score of the late thirties or forties but the orchestration is much more delicate and nuanced and of course the form is more satisfying. It has rightly been compared to Strauss's 'Sinfonia Domestica' which as, it happens, is also one of my favourite pieces. The Strauss is more full powered and 'grown up' mainly because of it's amorous or erotic content but both works succeed in enhancing commonplace or everyday life. It has always struck me as odd that more music doesn't attempt to do this but in fact this ethos is most often found in old Hollywood films and almost nowhere else.
The two symphonies on the disc reveal Carpenter as a sort of American Mahler, but without the avant-garde tendancies of the real American Mahler, Charles Ives who was as progressive as the Austrian. The first is mainly idyllic with few stormclouds which, when they occur are reminiscent of Roy Harris but only threaten and do not burst. The ethos suggests both urban and american rural but the urban is noticably less troubled or nervous than is usually found in 20thC music. Idylls elsewhere are rare and short lived.
The more turbulent Second Symphony is a really fine work with a couple of wonderful Wagnerian sentimental passages in the slow movement of a kind found elsewhere only in Korngold. It is jaunty, swashbuckling and adventurous, confident and 'romantic-modern' without neurosis.
