Szell's recording of Sibelius' 2nd Symphony is the best I have heard, and the magnificent finale easily matches the equally grand Beethoven recording on this CD. The Concertgebouw Orchestra plays beautifully and Szell, as always, never fails to live up to expectations. The mid-1960s stereo sound is very good.

Do not be tempted to write this CD off as a curiosity for Szell fans; it is at least as good as anything he recorded in Cleveland. I thoroughly recommend it.

I think this is a good recording of the Beethoven 5: very taut and dramatic, but an unlistenable performance of Sibelius 2. Sure, Sibelius also wrote dramatic music, but Szell's performance is overwhelmingly fast, so frenetic that it is hard to listen to despite being well-played.

a wonderful sibelius 2, great orchestra, terrific pacing of each movement, joyful and triumphant climax...a gt cd for the sibelius, can take or leave the beethoven but the sib is "de rigeur"...if u dont believe me see the review in the penguin guide who do seem to have a bit of a clue when it comes to a great recording
