Acoustic Triangle is a new grouping of three popular and highly respected jazz musicians on the UK scene: Malcolm Creese, bass player and record producer, the redoubtable John Horler on piano, and, on reeds, Tim Garland, a leader in his own right and sometime member of Chick Corea's latest quartet. As the title of the group implies, the musicians play acoustically throughout, always a considerable bonus. With their first album 'Interactions', they have done themselves proud by producing a superbly played and recorded album of readily accessible modern music. It hardly needs emphasising that improvisation is at the heart of jazz, but for truly memorable music-making, not only do the musicians have to listen to each other, they also have to interact, and in this the trio succeeds triumphantly. With Malcolm Creese expertly supplying the essential pulse, John Horler and Tim Garland weave magical and moving tapestries of sound from themes by Maurice Ravel, Ralph Towner, Kenny Wheeler, and with their own considerable compositions. Of course, musicians also have to communicate with the audience, and I am confident that listeners with sensibilities in receptive order will be delighted when they acquire this disc. Jazz fans outside the UK may be assured that this is indeed a superlative product. Those closer to home should compound the satisfactions to be found in a fine recording by attending Acoustic Triangle gigs at the earliest opportunity. They will be rewarded by beautiful music-making of the highest order.
