Amazon.co.uk Review

Back in the 1980s, there were few phenomena bigger than the Transformers. A hugely popular toy line, it also spawned a long-running comic book, a hit feature film and successful animated television series. Transformers--Original Series, Volume One collects five episodes of the hit television series: the epic, three-part "The Ultimate Doom", plus two episodes that have never before been available in the UK ("Fire on the Mountain" and "War of the Dinobots").

Epic in scope, the story of the Transformers was a timeless, if unsophisticated, tale of good versus evil: the heroic Autobots battled to prevent the evil Decepticons from realising their goal of universal conquest. The resulting civil war raged for millions of years, draining the energy resources from their home planet Cybertron and leading the two robotic races to earth. Here, they continue their war, using their unique ability to alter their bodies to take on the form of earthly vehicles, weapons and creatures.

In the morass of bad 80s' cartoons, the Transformers shone like a beacon on Saturday mornings--excellent animation (for many in the US and UK, it was their first introduction to Japanese manga, albeit basic) and characters with real personalities and depth (for most children of the 80s, Autobot leader Optimus Prime was a very real hero). For the ever-growing legions of Transformers fans out there, as well as any 80s' nostalgia buffs, Transformers--Original Series, Volume One is required viewing.--Robert Burrow

5.0 out of 5 stars This DVD is worth having, 13 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This is a great DVD containing some of the first ever episodes which were previously unavailable in the UK. In case you didn't know they are:
War of the Dinobots
The Ultimate Doom (feature length of 3 episodes)
Fire on the mountain
They also include a character called Skyfire (Jetfire) who had a very limited number of episodes, which is good to finally see available.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poorly Designed DVD's for an otherwise excellent series, 6 Jan 2007
By Lost and Damned (London, England) - See all my reviews
When I first brought the three Original Series DVD's I thought I was getting the complete series in Sequance.

Sadly it turns out to be just the reverse, Volume 1 should have had "More then Meets the Eye" parts 1 to 3 on it to start the series off, but instead we end up having to watch volume 2 in order watch from the very beginning which has the first 6 episodes from the original series in their correct order, why it was placed as Volume 2 I can't Understand.

Of the 5 Episodes on the other 2 Volumes, Volume 2 should have been episode #1 "SOS Dinobots", which ends up on Volume 3, episodes #2 to 4 should have been "The Ulitmate Doom" part 1 to 3 which are here on Volume One instead and episode #5 should have been "War Of The Dinobots" which is also here on Volume 1 but placed before "The Ulitmate Doom" when it should have been after!

Volume 3's first episode should have been "Countdown to Extinction" which is instead the third episode on Volume 3, the second episode which is placed first on Volume 3 instead is "Fire in the Sky", the third episode should have been "Heavy Metal War", instead it's place last on the 3rd Volume, "Fire on the Mountain" should have been Fourth is instead is on Volume 1 as the first episode, after that the fith and last episode of the first Original series should have been "A Plague of Insecticons", instead it's the next to last as the 4th episode on Volume 3.

Maverick who designed and produced these DVD's did a very poor job, while the menu setup is ok, having the wrong episodes on each volume and in the wrong order is a huge negative, add to the fact that there is NO extras just makes these DVD's a miss at all costs set, I'd rather buy the Silver Grey Season One box set.

The only reason I can give it one star is because it was a brillant animated series, if it had been any other series, I wouldn't have even given it a single star for such a poorly excuted DVD Release.

4.0 out of 5 stars an animated series pioneering entertainment for todays youth, 26 Dec 2001
Transformers series one brought about a whole new genre in animation. With its mixtures of autobots who transformed into everyday automobiles and the evil deceptacons transforming into inventions such as fighter gets and cannons battling on the planets earth and cybertron, this series is non stop thrills, action and danger. The series gets better every time you watch it. An all round great view for the young and not so young.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but flawed
I'd expect a chronological sequence of the classic episodes of the Transformers. Having War of the Dinobot and the Ultimate Doom in this release doesn't make sense. Read more
