5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible - nothing like this before or since!, 22 Jul 2005
By A Customer
This has to be one of the greatest theatre productions ever staged by The Royal Shakespeare Company - fortunately captured on film, released in 1968, and now released on a stunning dvd. With a host of legendary actors such as Patrick Magee, Glenda Jackson, Freddie Jones and others, this tells the tale of Marat's assassination, staged in the asylum at Charenton by de Sade. The performances, music, sets and just about everything is perfection. Do yourself a favour and get it while you still can.

5.0 out of 5 stars mind-blowing (almost literally), 9 Jan 2008

The play by Peter Weiss was "important", but that is no guarantee that it might be worth watching, rather the opposite. However this film version is quite one of the most stunning films ever made. The visuals are fantastic (not least the very young Glenda Jackson), the acting is quite superb and the music quite amazing. It is a disgrace that the VHS is only available as NTSC, and this DVD only as Region 1. (However, the DVD is a very great improvement on the VHS: you can, for a start, actually read the small print with which the film opens.)
