Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
After the most painless installation yet from a Microsoft product, Office XP Standard immediately starts to make an impression. The code has obviously been tightened with programs starting and closing noticeably faster. As well as several key changes from Office 2000 to improve productivity and collaboration, many smaller welcome tweaks have been introduced to improve functionality across the board.

The focus in this release is on making Office smarter, providing better collaboration tools and self-customising to individual users (with a bit of help). The "Smart Tags" are a clever way of automatically matching data in documents to tasks such as inserting an address when you're writing a letter in Word or copying and pasting data in Excel. This is extremely welcome as is the ability to customise auto-correct (don't correct these types of errors but do correct these). Also new are "Task panes". Imagine a cross between a Wizard and the Help section which, by means of some drop-down menus makes relevant commands easily available, thus achieving results faster.

As well as the cross-product improvements, each suite has had an overhaul. Outlook has seen many tweaks that improve usability and productivity notably auto-correct during typing and improved ease of setting up mail accounts plus support for Hotmail. PowerPoint contains a plethora of enjoyable new effects that can be combined in multiple ways leading to the swishiest presentations and some useful new applications most notably the organisation chart creator. Word and Excel benefit the most from "Smart Tags" and "Task Panes". Some new useful features include a merge function in Word for incorporating other users' changes, a "Word Count" display for those late-night essays, a drop-down menu in Excel with commonly used functions and an extremely easy-to-use set of diagram creators.

Office XP will improve productivity and results across the entire application suite. The improved functionality especially with "Smart Tags" and "Task Panes" once learnt will save users considerable time in creating quality documents. --Colin Neal

1.0 out of 5 stars Too expensive, few new features, 19 Oct 2002
By A Customer
Office XP is not particularly different from previous versions of Office and if you've already got Office 2000 I advise you against spending a stupid amount of money on the latest version of Office.

Office 2000 and even Office 97 deliver all the features you're likely to need and are capable of reading documents produced by other people using Office XP so I really see no need to pay several hundred pounds for this version, especially with the Microsoft Product Activation feature which means that if you ever make any significant hardware changes or want to install the same copy of Office XP on another system at some stage you'll have to get in touch with Microsoft and obtain their permission first!

I've also found that Office XP is no more reliable than Office 2000, in fact if anything it's been more prone to crashing than Office 2000 on my Windows 2000 system.

The hyped new features such as "Smart Tags" and the option to get rid of "Clippy" are a nonsense. "Smart Tags" are very annoying, getting in the way of things and "Clippy" could easily be removed from Office 97 and Office 2000 in any case using the set up program. These are hardly improvements and certainly don't warrant buying a new version!

Office XP has some useful new features (such as the sidebar) but they're not worth the price Microsoft are asking - if you already have Office 2000 or 97 avoid this product, if you don't have a previous version of Office and you're using Windows 2000 or Windows XP then Office XP might be worth a look, otherwise you'd probably do best trying to find a copy of Office 2000.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Satisfied - MS Office XP Standard, 23 Jun 2004
By A Customer
Having investigated cheaper suites due to budget restrictions, and then having seen this package advertised on Amazon for £75:00 I couldn't believe it was true. It is NOT an upgrade, or educational, it IS an original. The supplier was very efficient (softwarekings) and delivered extremely promptly. For your money you receive an original holograph MS disk in a DVD case along with a Product Key. I activated and registered my installation on-line with MS without any problems, so I can testify that it is genuine. And for the program itself, well what can I say, it is the real thing. Microsoft Office XP Standard has all the features that I would have expected from the full version. It gives me everything I need and more besides, and the price tag didn't break the bank.
The lack of documentation might be a problem for some, but as there are so many good books and/or CD's available that teach the esentials of using MS products, this shouldn't be too big a problem. In my opinion, this is one of those rare occasions when I can honestly say "I got real honest value for money".
Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value, 30 Jun 2004

Ordered on a Sunday night. Arrived Thursday morning. Product activated online OK with Microsoft and all Office updates have been downloaded and work with this version. Most people who order this can manage without the instructions but lots of sites out there to help anybody who does get stuck
