Very Luca, and yet not, 28 Mar 2002
By A Customer
For admirers of Luca Bloom, this album is at once very Luca, and then again not.If you enjoy his simple playing style - just Luca, his plaintive voice and a guitar - then you will not be disappointed. However, the departure from singing only (well, nearly only) his own material is marked. As Luca said himself, he bought 200 CDs and locked himself away for two weeks to see what he could learn from other people's music. There are risks - Throw Your Arms Around Me (originally by Hunters and Collectors) is practically an Australian national anthem and not to be toyed with lightly. Additionally, the inclusion of a cover of Dancing Queen by Abba could be considered taking the piss if not carefully done. And not to forget, this album is also his first on his own label. Its hard to say exactly what he did learn from the experience, but Luca manages to carry it off. Not only with the two big risks, but with all the songs on the album. If you have wondered about Luca Bloom, then this is a perfect opportunity to get to know his style with material that is at least familiar. For Luca fans, something different but still unmistakabley him. Highly recommended.
